From Caf to Career

By Keyera Harmon – Getting an internship on campus can be a lot easier than many students think. For Gustavo Santos, landing his internship at the campus cafeteria was a natural next step towards his future.

After working for Sodexo for years, from Bucks, to catering, to Spoonholder, it wasn’t hard for Gustavo to find the internship he has now at the cafeteria, especially since he was referred by a friend who had taken the same internship before him. Gustavo shared that the process was simple and familiar, which made it less stressful and more approachable. “It really helps when you already know the place and the people,” Gustavo explained. That comfort gave him the confidence to step into this internship with a clear idea of what to expect.

His day to day responsibilities go far beyond just running around for Sodexo, Gustavo manages menu reports, temperature logs, and even simple soup signs, making sure everything in the kitchen is organized and ready to go. He also prints out recipes for the chefs so they can prepare meals smoothly. On top of that, he helps with side projects like emailing people for his boss, creating gift cards for the Spoonholder, and pitching in wherever he’s needed. Gusatvao’s advice for students seeking internships is to start your search by meeting with Stacie Hays, and also checking LinkedIn or Handshake for job postings. He recommends everyone do an internship before graduating to build their skills and set themselves up for success. While having an internship on campus is convenient, Gustavo believes that off campus experiences can push you out of your comfort zone and help you grow even more.
