By Lynx Gregoire – The Mustangs are gearing up for their season debut at the Augustana Twilight meet. The excitement surrounding the program is palpable. After four years as a part-time coach, this marks Coach Eilers first full season coaching full-time—a transition he says has made all the difference.
“It’s been good to finally have the time I’ve needed to get the kids ready,” Eilers explained. “With a bigger coaching staff now, we can really take care of the athletes and continue to evolve as a program.”
Preparation has been deliberate and focused. The coaching staff emphasizes practicing the exact strategies the runners will execute in competition. “We want the athletes to feel confident going into each meet,” Eilers said. “We’ve been running race simulations in practice so they’re already in the right mindset when they step to the line.”
Expectations for the season opener are high. This year’s squad is touted as one of the strongest in recent memory, with both the men’s and women’s teams boasting deep rosters and standout front-runners.“We’ve got a lot of guys coming back who didn’t run last year, and they’re ready to do big things,” said Eilers. “On top of that, this freshman group is strong and eager. I really think this is the strongest team we’ve had in four years.”
As for standout names, the staff is expecting significant leaps across the board, particularly from their upperclassmen. On the men’s side, Parker Holder is expected to make a statement , while sophomore Gaby Ryan is poised for a breakout season with the women.
Of course, the season opener also brings nerves, especially for newcomers. The coaching staff has worked hard to address the mental side of racing. “We spend a lot of time talking about goals and building a clear strategy before meets,” Eilers shared. “Confidence in their pack running helps, too. We remind them we’re never defined by one race—it’s about growth and working together.”
With strong preparation, a deep roster, and a confident mindset, the Mustangs are ready to make their mark at their Augustana Twilight meet.
