By Dayne Davis – Saturday (October 19, 2024) the Mustangs hosted cross-town rival, Briar Cliff University, in battle for the saddle.
The Chargers entered the game looking to beat Morningside for the first time in school history, but Zack Chevalier and the Mustangs had other plans as Morningside put the belt to the Chargers backside with a dominating 63-6 win.
The Mustangs got off to a hot start scoring four unanswered touchdowns in the first quarter alone. Max Hough got the party started with a 74-yard TD run on his second touch of the game.
Nolan Feller also made his presence felt on the ground early as he punched in a 17-yard rushing TD to put the Mustangs up 21-0.
Early in the second quarter, familiar face Drew Sellon hauled in a 38-yard strike from Chevalier to record his second TD of the game. Sellon put up his sixth 100+ yard game of the season, still in second place as NAIA receiving yards leader.
Kelynn Jacobsen, son of Morningside Defensive Coordinator Casey Jacobsen, gave the Chargers fits as he put on a career performance. Filling up the stat sheet, Jacobsen had a team-high in receiving yards with 138 and he added three touchdowns as a cherry on top.
Chevalier led the high–powered Mustang offense to a dominating 56-0 halftime lead, finishing the game with 328 yards and 3 TD. He leads the NAIA in both passing yards and passing touchdowns.
The Morningside offense scored TD’s on Briar Cliff in each of its first 8 offensive possessions while the defense forced either a turnover or punt on its first 6 defensive possessions.
The Morningside defense was astounding before intermission allowing 0 points at half. Dijion Walls recorded a diving interception to begin the second quarter. Walls ended the day with one INT, two PBU & three total tackles.
Cade Harriman, Blake Bellamy, and Cale Pittenger each put on outstanding performances as well. Cade finished the game as the second leading tackler, with eight and a forced fumble, while Bellamy had nine tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss. Pittenger was unstoppable, recording two sacks on the day.
The Mustangs will hit the road and head to Sioux Center to take on the Defenders of Dordt University next Saturday, October 26, 2024.
