IM basketball title decided

by Chaise Pfanstiel–Intramural basketball has been giving Morningside students something to do on Sunday nights for about four weeks now, but the time has come to an end.

On Sunday, March 10, the semifinals and finals were held in the HPER at 7:30 and 8:30p.m. In the semifinal match team Real Deal took on Trent’s Dropouts. Real Deal grabbed the win 69-60, but it was a back-and-forth game until the very end.

“The boys were all just playing well. We moved the ball well and were knock down shooting. It was cool and fun for about a minute to beat the former basketball players team, but then we had to move our focus to the Championship right away,” senior Zack Chevalier, Real Deal team member said.

The Championship game was between team Real Deal vs. Rim Jobs. Jumping right into the next game, the fatigue already setting in for team Real Deal was obvious. It was a slow start for both teams and fouls were being called left and right. The score going into halftime was 13-12 with 12 of those points from free throws.

In the second half both teams started to drive the basket and get easy buckets, bringing the score to 28-21 with eight minutes left. Rim Jobs pushed the pace and put the other team to the test by continuing to run the floor throughout the entire game.

“We watched them play in the semifinals and knew they were going to be tired, so we wanted to push the pace and get easy transition buckets. They might have been a little bigger than us inside, otherwise we had the shooters and speed,” Rim Jobs team member Drew Sellon said.

As the game clock ran through the final seconds, the boys all started celebrating as if they had won a National Championship. That is the seriousness of these intramural matchups. In the end, Rim Jobs took the win 44-39.

As a spectator, it is fun to attend and see friends participate in athletic contests.

“I like going because I get to see a lot of my football guy friends play basketball which is my sport, so it just is weird and fun to me,” sophomore Jordyn Carr said.

At the finish of the game, the participants were asked if they would be signing up again next year, and out of 20 players, 18 said yes.

“Oh, we will be back and better than ever. We already have a game plan on lock for next year. You’re looking at the 2025 intramural champs right here,” the Real Deal squad said.
