by Chaise Pfanstiel–The Morningside women’s basketball team hit the road Feb. 3 and grabbed the victory over the Mount Marty Lancers. The final score was 84-69 and every Mustang had minutes in the game.
After the first quarter, the score was all tied 16-16. The Mustangs extended their lead 39-33 at the half. Something was sparked in the locker room for Morningside as they came out full throttle in the third quarter adding 10 quick points to the board.
“I feel I have been filling my role well recently. I have got into a groove and have found how to play with confidence,” Lily Vollertsen said.
Vollertsen led the Mustangs with 24 points going 10-for-15 from the floor. Senior Alexis Spier had 18 points, including four three pointers. Chloe Loftstrom went 6-for-8 from the floor with 13 points to help the Mustangs get the win. As a team the Mustangs shot 55.2 percent with a 40 percent mark from beyond the three-point line.
“If we want to beat Dordt, we need to play together and play to each other’s strengths. Limiting turnovers and hitting our shots from the field will lead us to success on Wednesday,” Vollertsen stated.
The Mustangs will head to Dordt University on Wednesday, Feb. 7, to take on the no. 1 Dordt Defenders.
