One Streak Ends & Another Starts

by Chaise Pfanstiel–The Morningside women’s basketball team had a rough go the last few weeks, stacking up a three-game losing streak. They seem to have turned it around, however.

The Mustangs are now on a two-game win streak and hoping to grab the third this Saturday versus Midland.

The first win they were able to put in their pocket was against the Doane Tigers. The Tigers were able to make a jump in the first quarter, but after that the game was controlled by Morningside. Loftstrom led the Mustangs in scoring with 19 points, going 7-for-7 from the floor. Three more Mustangs tallied up 10 points or more.

“I felt good going into the game. I knew the plan and what my job was. I felt like it was a good team win,” senior Chloe Loftstrom said.

Next, the women faced off against Northwestern and snagged another big win with the final score 62-52. The Mustangs were able to jump out ahead early in the game, but Northwestern continued to fight. Morningside led 31-23 at halftime.

The Morningside defense was a problem for the Red Raiders. Northwestern committed a season-high 28 turnovers and Morningside tallied 21. Olivia Larson led both teams with six steals. Vollertsen added 12 points and seven rebounds. Alexis Spier and Chaise Pfanstiel both racked up 10 points to help the Mustangs get the win.

“We have struggled playing as a team previously this season, but these last two games I feel it’s been a whole new team. Players are stepping up and the team is staying a tight-knit group,” senior and captain Alexis Spier said.

Morningside will hit the road this Saturday for their matchup against Midland in Fremont, Nebraska. The Mustangs have previously defeated the Warriors 70-54 at home.
