60 percent of you is water; Drink up

by Chloe Pieper–Daily water consumption can be a difficult task for Morningside students to accomplish. It is even more difficult for Morningside athletes.

Some students replace water intake with energy drinks, pop, or food. Although some foods can be a part of daily water intake, science suggests it is better for athletes to actually consume water.

Mara Brown said, “I don’t even know the last time I drank water. I drink more dark pop than water some days. I even got a water bottle from my coach for Christmas but I rarely use it. I’d rather have an ice-cold Diet Coke any day.”

Drinking water is important, especially during exercise for many reasons. The benefits of increasing water intake are improving performance in an activity, regulating body temperature, releasing the toxins out of it, clearing any brain fog, and more.

Payton Miller said, “I drink maybe half a plastic water bottle a day. I think my lack of drinking water stems from the fact that I really like juice and flavor. Water is really plain plus I’m in the pool a lot so it’s hard to get myself to drink water when I’m choking on chlorinated water.”

However, there are students who rely on their “emotional support water bottle.” This is an object attachment that a person has with a certain water bottle. This bottle goes everywhere with them but does not always mean that they actually drink the water.

Sara Clausen is an example of a student having an emotional support water bottle. Clausen said, “I carry my water bottle everywhere I go. It goes in my shopping cart, bed, bookbag… literally everywhere with me. I try to drink a gallon of water every day but the days that I don’t drink a gallon, I end up drinking at least 50 ounces of water.”

The theory is that students should drink half their body weight in ounces of water. However, there are factors that lead to the increase in the intake of water. These factors include atmosphere temperature, altitude, intensity and duration of a workout, fitness level, size of a person, and gender to name a few.
