By Rena Ketelsen– The Academic Support Center offers the opportunity to students to receive free help in various subjects and classes.
It is located on the 2nd floor in the library and has tutors for all math courses, computer science, introductory biology, introductory chemistry, nursing, accounting, physics, and Spanish. According to Regina Bade, Director of the Academic Support Center, tutors for those subjects and classes are available almost every semester.
The hours usually go from 8am to 4pm and there are also evening hours. Bade explained, “It is entirely dependent upon student tutors that semester and what schedules work for them.”
At the same time, students have the option to request appointments with the tutors. They can do so on the library’s website and those meetings can be held anywhere, although it is encouraged to have them in the library.
According to Bade, most of the tutors are students with the exception of four staff tutors who help with math. All other subjects and classes have tutors who are students.
The Academic Support Center has been around for over 20 years, and it started out rather informal. Back then, it was located in Lewis Hall in the student services area. But it got moved to the library later on to integrate with library services, because the administration thought it to be a good fit. An area was renovated in the library, to created offices and a study room.
Since the beginnings of the Academic Support Center, it has grown. Although the numbers of students that take advantage of the service vary each semester, there are more now than there used to be 20 years ago, Bade recounted.
Cristal Delatorre, a junior from Sioux City, who needed help with physics said, “I have enjoyed my experience and I have found it very helpful, since I would not have passed physics without it.”
