Morningside’s ESL Endorsement

By Jadyn Steffen– One of the many benefits of studying at Morningside University includes the wide variety of majors and academic programs offered. For education majors, one great program offered is called the English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement

The ESL endorsement allows college students to earn their teaching degree and gain experience towards working with their own future students whose first spoken language is not English. With this endorsement, students amplify their resumé for future employers and offer a different perspective in the classroom.

Sophomore Jayden Gessert, who is currently working towards her ESL endorsement says, “Even if you aren’t specifically teaching a child English as their second language it can still strengthen their learning capabilities. It also provides an alternative learning strategy to go about teaching children with learning disabilities as well as all students in general.”

Incorporating new languages in the classroom expands students’ minds, comprehension, creativity, and overall knowledge.

Junior Mel Harson, also working towards her ESL Endorsement says, “I would definitely recommend it for anyone going into the teaching profession and it’s not that difficult to earn. In order to get it, you just have to take six education classes that are all Spanish related, which is super simple to do especially over four years of college.”

Overall, this program offers a lot of opportunity for not only Morningside students during their time on campus, but also what they as future teachers will bring to their own classrooms and their own students.
