Spring Break in COVID Times

by Hailey Barrus-Spring break is the breath of fresh air college students need to make it through the spring semester. Nearly a year ago, students ventured out to all different parts of the country looking for an “escape”. From Florida to Colorado, Morningside students packed their bags and went on trips they would never forget.

Last year, spring break ended in a national lockdown and marked the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic in the United States. Now a year later, students are preparing for spring break a little differently.

It is no secret that in the last year people have learned a lot about the virus and how to be smart and live through the pandemic. Social distancing, Zoom classes, and staying home have become the new norm. However, with vaccinations being distributed and impatient college kids, there is still hope for a fun spring break this year.

“This has been a hard year for not only myself but my family as well,” said senior Sadie Meyerink, “My brother is a doctor and I also work in healthcare, so I understand the risks of spreading COVID first hand. I think students should still proceed with caution when venturing out for spring break this year. I got my second dose of the vaccine and I will still be staying home.”

Although some students are still following the guidelines and remaining cautious about travel, there is a large portion of the Mustang community that are itching to go anywhere that isn’t Iowa for spring break.

One Morningside student said, “I just want my life back, and I still plan on heading somewhere tropical for spring break, I will just be smarter about it.”

Even though there will not be masses of drunk college kids lining the beaches of Florida or in a brewery in the mountains, students are still finding ways to get out into the world and take a needed break from their studies.
