The article I read for this week’s news comment is called “Biden might just run the most aggressive effort to combat climate change in U.S.” The article is from Mic.com.

The article talks about Biden’s plan to try to combat climate change, which is exactly what this country needs after four years of Trump not even believing in climate change. Biden plans to staff his administration with people who believe that climate change is real and needs to be addressed. He is creating new positions focused entirely on climate change. Biden plans to act as soon as he gets into the office.

This article was very refreshing to read and makes me hopeful for our future. Having a president who didn’t even believe in climate change for the last four years has been so concerning and I am so glad we are going to have someone in office that cares about our planet.

I think this article was written very well and it seems very promising and gives readers a gleam of hope. They gave a lot of good information on Biden’s plan and how he was going to enact his plan.

I think this article was aimed at climate change activists and people who just care about the earth in general.

The profile I decided to do was on Chris Stapleton. The article is titled ‘Christ Stapleton On Standing Still and Starting Over and is from GQ. Stapleton is a country singer-songwriter and he is releasing a new album, Starting Over, tomorrow, November 13. He finished this album in Feburary just before the lockdown.

Over quarantine Stapleton decided to start riding a bicycle. He said “I’m 42 years old and decided it’s a good idea to start riding a mountain bike. It’s been good—just a kind of release. In no way am I going to switch careers or anything.” He said it helps him “turn off part of your brain” and help clears space for the creative process to take place.

Stapleton has taken his free time over quarantine to appreciate the life he usually gets to live and he looks forward to get back to living life on the road.

I think this article was very well written and really showcases who Stapleton is. At the end of the article there is a Q&A and I think that will help his fans really connect with him and be able to know his true feelings. I liked reading and being able to relate to longing for the world to go back to normal. As much as I miss live music, I can’t even imagine how much these artists miss performing.

The article I chose for this week’s news comment is called “Why election uncertainty is so hard to process, according to a psychologist.” The article is from Vox.com and was posted on November 4.

The article is about why this feeling of not knowing feels so uniquely awful. The short answer is that humans hate uncertainty. For a longer answer, the author went to Dr. Kevin Antshel, director of clinical training in the psychology department at Syracuse University. Dr. Antshel explained that as life has grown relatively more stable over the course of history, people crave that stability even more.

Dr. Antshel says that uncertainty is associated with depression and anxiety which is why this all feels so awful. Especially with all the access to social media and all of this negative media, it is not a great combination.

This article stuck out to me because I have been struggling with the election uncertainty. It’s the second day since the election and we still don’t have answers. I think the whole country hates this feeling of uncertainty. The world is complete chaos, especially on social media. My social media is filled with fake news of ‘election fraud’ and stopping the count and just a bunch of bull crap and that is even more disheartening.

I am glad this article was written because it is good to know that there is a reason why we are all feeling like this and it was good to read that there are legitimate reasons behind why we’re all feeling like this. I think this article was written specifically for that reason and it is aimed at people who are struggling to cope with this situation.

The article I choose for this week is called “The Fyre Fest guy was put in solitary confinement for taping a podcast in prison.” This article was posted to Mic.com on October 26.

The article talks about Billy McFarland, the mastermind behind the Fyre Festival scam of 2017. If you don’t know about the Fyre Festival, it was an event that McFarland created and was supposed to be a music festival in the Bahamas. When guests arrived they realized that there would be no guest artists, no five star food, and only tents to sleep in. It was a disaster and went viral on social media and Hulu and Netflix both put out documentaries about the Fyre Festival in 2019.

McFarland is currently serving 6 years in an Ohio penitentiary. He has been charged with several counts of wire fraud. Now, he is in solitary confinement for up to three months for taping a podcast from prison. His lawyer says nothing he did was illegal, but the feds punished him anyways.

I think this article is aimed at people who follow news around Billy McFarland and the Fyre Festival. I watched the Fyre Festival documentaries and I enjoyed watching them a lot so I like when I see news surrounded them. I like to know what McFarland is up to now. I honestly might listen to the podcast because I’m very curious to see what he has to say about everything.

I think this article did a good job of getting its point across. There were several quotes from McFarland’s lawyer and about the current situation but there was also enough background information so that if you didn’t really know about the Fyre Festival you could still read the article and know what is going on.

The article I read for this week’s news comment was called The often-overlooked reasons why young people don’t vote. It was posted to Vox on September 15.

The article talks about how young American’s aren’t as likely to vote as older Americans. In 2016 only 46% of 18-29 year olds voted, compared to 71% of those over 65. The article talks about how young voters aren’t turning up to the polls and it’s because their lives are not set up for it.

This is because young people are attending college, often in different locations from their hometowns. They’re working or attending school and have unstable schedules. Most older adults have a stable work schedule and have time to figure out voting options. Registering to vote and figuring out where and how to vote is very difficult for young adults.

Reading this article has made me more thankful than ever for Morningside. I actually voted yesterday on campus and I am very glad I was given this opportunity.

I think this article was aimed at both younger and older voters. I think that younger voters can read this article and be able to relate and not feel alone about the struggles of voting and I think older voters can read this and try to understand how difficult it is for younger people to vote.

This article was written very well. They interviewed three young voters and had a lot of insight into the topic. I think it is very important to raise awareness about voting and the struggles of voting.

The article I read was called ‘3 debate moments that showed how unsuited Trump is for the presidency.’ The article was written by Aaron Rupar and published to Vox.com on September 29.

Anyone who watched the debate probably agrees that it was a complete shit show (for lack of better words). Trump wouldn’t let anyone but himself speak, including the moderator. It was so bad that Biden even told Trump “Will you shut up, man?’

The three aspects of the debate this article talked about are: Trump refusing to condemn white supremacy, trump refusing to pledge to not try to steal the election, and Trump’s comments on climate change.

“Trump was teed up a softball about racism – and wouldn’t even swing at it” was the headline (and the best one I’ve seen so far) Vox used to begin talking about Trump’s long history of racism. Instead of denouncing white supremacist groups, Trump addressed a far-right group the Proud Boys and asked them to stand by. This group took this as an endorsement from Trump, adding fuel to their fire.

This article was definitely created for people who do not support Trump. Trump supporters would roll their eyes and somehow find a way to try to convince themselves (and everybody else) that everything in this article is a lie. I’ve mentioned it before, but it is so interesting to me that Trump can literally do anything and not lose his die hard supporters. It’s almost scary.

I think the article was well written. It took good quotes right from the debate and even added some tweets with videos from the debate. I think this debate left a lot of people terrified for our country, as it should have. It was a complete disaster.

The article I read this week was “Zoom isn’t working: How to fix and troubleshoot the app.” This article was posted to Mic.com on September 22 by Tebany Yune.

As you can probably tell from the title the article talks about what to do when Zoom isn’t working. I thought this was pretty relevant since especially in our class we’re always having problems with Zoom.

Some tips the article gives on making sure your Zoom is running properly is to close apps or programs you’re using (the more apps you have open the slower zoom is going to be), make sure Zoom is updated, and checking to see if Zoom is down ( you can check Zoom’s official twitter account to see if Zoom servers are down).

The article gives other tips regarding your video and audio not working and what to do about lagging and stuttering Zoom meetings.

I think this article is relevant for not only students but companies who are using Zoom for work meetings, conferences, etc. As we all know Zoom has its fair share of hiccups and I guarantee there are numerous articles out there like this with giving advice on what to do when you can’t get your Zoom to work.

I thought this article was well written and even included real life examples like Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos forgetting to unmute himself during the big tech antitrust hearing.

The article I read is called “Why can’t Americans stay away from theme parks right now?” It was published to Mic.com on September 11.

The article talks about theme parks rising back to popularity after reopening from coronavirus closures. Over Labor Day weekend, theme parks in Orlando like Disney World and Universal Studies maxed out their, now lower, capacities for the first time since reopening.

Even though Florida theme parks were sold out over Labor Day, its been a rough year for the theme park businesses. Disney’s parks suffered a nearly $10 billion decline in revenue this year.

I think this article’s audience would be people interested in theme parks and people trying to figure out whether or not it would be safe to go to a theme park during a pandemic. The article was written very factually and didn’t really hate on Disney or Universal for being open, they simply stated facts regarding them being up and running.

I would have liked if this article would’ve had a quote, because as we have learned quotes kind of put things into context and make them more meaningful. I would’ve liked a quote from a higher up at Disney or Universal or maybe a quote from someone who has attended a theme park since they’ve reopened and could attest to the safety of the parks.

The article I read was called “A third of Americans might refuse a Covid-19 vaccine. How screwed are we?” I got this article from Vox and it was published on September 10.

The article talks about how ever since the pandemic started public health experts have given the advice of flattening the curve. They expect the curve to flatten with the help of social distancing, lockdowns, contact tracing, etc., and then wait for a vaccine. The hope was, and still is, that a mass vaccination campaign can restore the world to normal.

There are several problems with the success of a vaccination. First of all, the vaccine has to be effective and there needs to be enough of it. Another problem is if people will even choose to get the vaccine or not.

Vaccine refusal looks like a real possibility. A new Kaiser Family Foundation poll asked respondents if they’d take a free vaccine before election day and 54% said they would decline.

In my opinion these statistics are pretty unsettling. I get that some people are antivaxers and are scared of vaccines but I can’t tell you the things I would do to make the world go back to normal. I vaccine seems very far fetched at this point, in my opinion.

Vaccines take a long time to make and the trial process is a long one. And now we’re learning that even if there is a vaccine half the world won’t get it. This isn’t the best news but honestly I haven’t really heard good news about Covid as a whole. This is just another example of getting used to this new world that we live in today.

The article I read is called ‘Can anything change Americans’ minds about Donald Trump? The eerie stability of Trump’s approval rating, explained.’ I got this article from Vox and it was posted on September 2.

I should start by saying I am very surprised I even clicked to open this article because I usually don’t get into politics much. I think that it’s a pretty dark depressing hole and I don’t really have the mental capacity to get into it but this headline really interested me and I wanted to know more.

The article is about previous presidents approval ratings compared to Trump’s. Trump’s current approval rating is 42.2 percent approval and 54.3 percent disapproval. Trump’s highest approval rating is 49 and his lowest is 35 – this is only a range of 15 points. Which the lowest range among almost every president.

I find these statistics very interesting. Especially with everything that has went on in the last year you would think that some people would change their opinion about Trump but that is not the case.

The person who wrote this article didn’t seem like they were a Trump fan so I would say that the audience of the article is people who don’t particularly like Trump or someone who just wants to know how people perceive our president.

I think this article is very interesting and it relates to things we talk about in class because we talk about how news can change peoples’ opinions or make them believe different things but with Trump, this is different. It seems that people have already formed their opinions about him and no matter what he does or what happens, those opinions are not going to change. You have either supported him and been a Trump fan from the start or you absolutely despise him, end of story.
