Heavy Hearts for Homer

The 16 year old polar bear Homer, was found dead around 7am by zoo staff.

Chris P. Bacon, Midland Zoo director stated “We will do everything in our power to determine how this bear died.”

Dr. Shanda Lear, senior staff veterinarian said “The zoo will perform a necropsy to try to determine the cause of death. The results will not be available for several weeks.”

Homers death following the death of Regina, the 10-year-old bobcat who died of renal failure and Kenya, the 6-year-old giraffe dying of a broken neck from a miracle accident (unrelated) are saddening.

Midland Zoo is doing all they can to investigate the death and ensure safety of all animals living in the zoo.
