In Washington D.C. a Bi-Partisan group of senators are looking to make a few canned to the Prison System.

Democrat Senator from Georgia Jon Ossoff, Democratic Senator Dick During of Illinois, and Republican Indians Senator Mike Braun have a bill called the Federal Prison Oversight Act.

“One investigation after another has revealed a culture of abuse, mismanagement, corruption, torture, and death that reaches to the highest levels. And yet it still operates without any meaningful independent oversight. The result has been catastrophic for both incarcerated people and staff.” – Said Senator Dick Durbin D-Ill. (Associated Press).

If the Bill passes the Justice Department would have to establish an Office of the Ombudsman for the Prison system. This would allow complaints and allegations in the federal prison system to be investigated and fielded.

The Bill would require both the Inspector General and Ombudsman office to report their findings of all complaints and investigations and would require the Bureau of Prisons to have a plan of action within 60 days.

As the country becomes more divided over Political issues its great to see some Bi-Partisan work and legislation make its way around before the 2022 midterms. This is important as it allows people with family in the prison system to be offered hope and the public to know what is going on in our prisons.
