Interview

Interviewing Steven Postolka, a former Morningside College student has made the best of his experience and learning in college to help him be where he is today. After morningside college he attended the University of Iowa to receive his graduate degree in law. Postolka is now a litigator for a Law firm  in Sioux City loving his job where he wouldn’t trade  for anything else. With a student asking Postolka “What made you go into Law?” He says “I went to law because I wanted to be a journalist , or a political scientist. I chose law school because it made me think of practical things and I enjoyed doing that on a daily basis.” This was the first person I had really met that was  a litigator , so I was curious on what aspect of the job would be the most difficult to handle. His response was that “People lie a lot , and it can be a difficult  balance to make sure money is coming to the firm while keeping justice at the same time.” Although the firm  he had received in Sioux City hired him in January ; the market in Sioux City was small compared to other cities that had a bigger population. I made a conjecture that maybe one day he would move to a bigger market/city. I asked him where do you see yourself in 3 years along with the question of would you want to move to a bigger city. He said no, because as he just said he had just obtained that position recently and he hasn’t had any problems, reasons to leave Sioux City. Overall Steven Postolka is a successful man on the right path to living out his dreams until he found out what’s next for him.

Four charged in connection of burning body in ditch

Reading this article and hearing this happen made me want to choose this article . This article is a very important story in my eyes , because of the change that the world has been trying to make for a while now . “On Wednesday, Michael Williams, 44, was found dead outside of Kellogg in Jasper County . ” A group of 4 elders Vogal, Cox, Garner and Johnson had burned a man of color (Michael Williams) and threw him in a ditch, afterwards hiding him in the basement until investigators asked . “Investigators said there was no indication that the alleged crime was racially motivated, and no hate crime charges are being brought. Williams and Vogel apparently knew each other and were in similar social circles.” With no evidence of racial crime I cannot assume that it is , but how long should our country have to deal with such hatred ?

observation

Doing this assignment I was doing the observation in the lobby of the Plex, one of the three residential halls on campus here at morningside. The plex wasn’t that busy with people so I decided to go to bucks where it’s a little more active. Bucks is an alternative to the cafe which is downstairs in the olsen building next to the bookstore. Students can come here to do their homework, but in my personal opinion the food is way better than the cafe food that is upstairs. Listening to people’s conversations around I heard people talking about many different subjects. A group of females were talking about how the school was going to shut down sooner than later and the cases are going up around campus, because she had friends who are in quarentine. One group of soccer players who I just met were talking about the LA Lakers vs the  Houston Rockets game, and how the rockets were going to come back. I had to intrude the conversation and say the Lakers are going to win of course. His response was “ I’m a rockets fan bro, so i have to act like they are going to beat them at least.” Since Isaac is from the UK I had asked him to pronounce the word nike which was a different pronunciation than what we would call it.

Black Lives Matter Support In Sports

The topic that I chose was the support of Black Lives Matter in different sports.Throughout the hectic year of 2020, Black Lives Matter along with the Coronavirus have become the center of attention in the United States. From basketball to tennis, teams and individual players have used their platform to support and spread awareness of the Black Lives Matter movement. Black Lives Matter is a decentralized political and social movement advocating for non-violent protests against incidents of police brutality and all racially motivated violence against black people.

Back in July, the NBA decided to start back up in “The Bubble,” located in Orlando, Florida. “The Bubble” is a place where the players and staff are away from the public and staying all while playing basketball with virtual crowds. Although the start up was exciting with close games like the Lakers and Clippers, “…the restart of the NBA season was bigger than basketball. Every NBA player kneeled during the national anthem, wearing “Black Lives Matter” shirts” (CNN). One of the most famous players around the world, Lebron James, is a leader for this movement in the league as well. “After Thursday’s game, James stressed that while there’s been progress and the league has been supportive of Black Lives Matters efforts, there’s more work to be done” (CNN).

About 3 weeks ago, the players of the NBA were again in support of the movement by boycotting and not playing their respective games in wake of the Jacob Blake shooting. This really disrupted the professional sports as the boycotts followed from WNBA, MLB, and MLS teams. “Players from the N.B.A. and the W.N.B.A. have long been at the forefront of protests against racism and police brutality” (NYTimes). About 3 hours after the first boycott came from the Milwaukee Bucks, George Hill, a point guard for the team, gave a team statement saying, “We are calling for justice for Jacob Blake and demand the officers be held accountable” (NYTimes). Other players from other leagues also took to social media to share their frustration with police brutality and support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

One of the most famous players in tennis has been shown to be one who is in full support of the movement. In the US Open, Naomi Osaka came out before each match, wearing 7 different facemasks for each round, which named an African American person whose names were cited multiple times in nationwide protests about racial injustice and police brutality. Of Japanese and Haitian descent, she said, [the masks were her way of using her platform to protest this injustice and advocate that Black lives matter (NYTimes). After being asked by a reporter after the tournament what her message was, Osaka replied with, “Well, what was the message that you got was more the question. I feel like the point is to make people start talking.” People are now starting to state that politics are trying to take over sports , which is not the case. People Just want equality, especially if we are playing on the same platform as everyone else.

Covid interview

Interviewing my classmate Chloe about her view on the corona virus on campus she thinks that the numbers have been getting worse because people haven’t been taking the right precautions. She thinks people don’t want to wear masks unless they have too. Most classrooms are doing a good job of spreading out around campus and having enough space to social distance from other students. Chloe also thinks that there will be a big jump in numbers for cases, probrally leading us to go all online classes for the future time being.

Restaurant owners are upset at Covid-19 laws

Throughout the whole pandemic different states and cities had regulations for their counties with mask mandating, and civilian capacity inside of buildings. Pennsylvania Bar owner Rod Ambrogi doesn’t agree with the capacity limit on indoor restaurants, or the rule of having to stop serving drinks at an earlier time, 10pm. He believed that it was stupid until now to even put on a mask which had them not following the rule with masks in the building. With the precautions to stay safe restaurants and bars were losing money left and right, so the fact of the matter that they could only hav 2-0,.. or maybe even 50% capacity was frustrating for owners who needed to make money now. Majority of owners; especially in Philadelphia were just happy to be open for the pandemic which they did follow guidelines which followed more people to attend their establishments instead of theirs. I do not believe this kind of article is news worthy enough to be important on the Washington post, because every state had their problems with following the rules and dealing with the closing of public places. Yet the lead was well put together and the title is what caught my attention with restaurant rebellion I was interested to see what happened.

Clemson’s Dabo Swinney: CFP shouldn’t wait for Big Ten, Pac-12

Dabo’s Swinney’s Clemson Tigers is ready to get the season back for their schools cancelling their season. As you may know some power 5 conferences have canceled their college football seasons all together , or move the season further into 2021. Swinny believe that they shouldn’t wait on those conferences to have a spring season and let them wait until next year , because playing that many games in that span would be ridiculous .”We’re ready to roll,” Swinney said. “That would be something I wouldn’t be in favor for. It’d be hard to start in November and then push the season into February.”

Hornets fire radio broadcaster John Focke after he tweeted racial slur

reading this article ,as we discussed in class may or may not be a typo on his end. Thinking back on typing and autocorrect rules, most of the time the word that corrects itself is a word that is used often in their vocabulary already. They finally acted on firing him after a amount of time to think over the issue, maybe it was a smart idea thinking that he could bring down their rating , listeners.

Concerns about radar guns for the health of Sioux City’s troopers

The Sioux City Highway Patrol has recently to have a huge concern that their troopers could develop cancer from longterm exposure from radiation waves by the devices. “The feeling here is to err on the side of caution until more is known about the issue,” Smith said. “The whole situation is under review.” Adam Smith, Spokesman. The ban affects 70 radar guns that will be withdrawn from service. State troopers will continue to use radar units with transmitters mounted on the outside of their cruisers. The move is considered to be the first of its kind by a state police agency.
