Article #1

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, often known as AOC, caused quite the chatter on social media because of the outfit that she wore at the 2021 Met Gala event.  The Met Gala is a charity event formally known as the Costume Institute Benefit.  The charity event is for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute of New York City. Many big name celebrities show up to this event often with stunning or rather interesting outfits on.  The articles retrieved are from The Daily Wire (An openly Conservative news outlet), CNN (Often viewed as a more liberal news outlet), and the New York Times (doesn’t typically push an agenda).

This year, AOC’S outfit was one of the most talked about outfits.  AOC wore a white dress that said “Tax the Rich” in red on the back of the dress.  Cortez is often criticized online, even by her own supporters.  AOC is very opinionated and not afraid to get into debates with people who disagree with her.  Ryan Saaverda from the Daily Wire reports that tickets to the Met Gala are around the $30,000 range, while getting a table at the event is around $275,000.  Many people are finding it very ironic that she is wearing an outfit that basically applies to everyone at the event. Considering that AOC is a politician in New York, it is fair to say that she makes a fair amount of money and would fall under the “rich” class of living.

While AOC took a bunch of heat for her outfit, she also got a lot of praise.  With AOC being a democrat, she has obviously established her point of view on political issues.  With this, she has a very strong fanbase and a very strong group of people who do not agree with her and her views.  Megan Hills from CNN reported that many called her stunt bold and subversive, while many called the stunt hypocritical.  AOC’s outfit was not the only outfit that caused controversy.  Many outfits were talked about throughout the event.  Some outfits were bold and some outfits were odd, but the outfits that steal the show are the outfits that send a message.  US Women’s Soccer player wore a red, white, and blue suit that said “IN GAY WE TRUST”.  Rapinoe is very open about her political ideas as well.

The criticism that AOC seems to take most is that she’s pushing a political agenda, but she’s also partying with celebrities who are all rich.  Taxing the rich means raising taxes for people who make a certain amount of money.  If you make a certain amount of money, you are taxed a higher percentage of your yearly income, than people in the upper and lower classes.  According to Anni Karni of the New York Times, AOC has been putting off signing a bill that would increase the federal minimum wage to $15/hour.  While AOC’s outfit at the Met Gala is very informative and could be something that people should look into, it doesn’t fit in well with some of the other things she does in office.  Taxes go to the Government, not so many people in need of it, which could raise eyebrows on why she isn’t passing that bill.

AOC’s outfit stirred a lot of controversy.  Some of it was good and some of it was bad.  The outfit got people on the internet talking about it which is the ultimate goal.  It helps push the agenda she was going for.

Cancer concerns caused the East Dakota Highway Patrol to ban the use of hand-held radar guns yesterday.  70 radar guns will be withdrawn from service.  State troopers will still continue to use radar units with transmitters mounted on the outside of their vehicles.

Spokesperson, Adam Smith stated “The feeling here is to err on the side of caution until more is known about the issue.  The whole situation is under review.”  The move is thought to be the first of its kind.

News Comment #2

The news comment I am talking about is the constant change of release date with movies. Venom: Let There be Carnage is the movie I am talking about in particular. The Venom sequel has been postponed many times since the Covid-19 pandemic began. The film was originally slated to release in October of 2020, but was then later pushed back to June of 2021. As the pandemic continued, the film was pushed back again to September of 2021. A couple weeks ago, due to the delta variant of Covid-19, the film was postponed to October 15th. There were rumors that the film was going to postponed to 2022. Those rumors were found out to be false.

Marvel Studios film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings released over labor day weekend and the film did very well. Even with the pandemic, the film broke the labor day box office record which is good for movies releasing in the future. This lead to the Venom Sequel being pushed forward two weeks earlier. The film will now release on October 1st.

The article is very insightful. The article is for typical movie goers and hardcore movie fans. It gives a lot of information about how much this film has been through since the pandemic. It also talks about how a lot of films have struggled in theaters due to COVID-19. Both of the marvel movies that have came out have done very well since the pandemic began. Both Black Widow and Shang-Chi did decent numbers at the box office. While they didn’t do typical Marvel Studios numbers, they did good for the average movie. Since Venom: Let There be Carnage is a Marvel property (although owned by Sony), there is optimism that the film will have good box office numbers.

News Comment #1

The news comment I am talking about is the controversy surrounding Bishop Sycamore. Bishop Sycamore is a high school that player IMG Academy, one of the nations top high school programs. The game was aired on ESPN. Sycamore claimed that they had many top college prospects, but was soon found out to be a hoax. The high school got beat bad by IMG Academy, which raised questions about them. It was later discovered that Bishop Sycamore is not a real high school. They do not have any classes, or any students. Head Coach Roy Johnson had lied about the school.

The article talks about how Roy Johnson was fired after the game. This is a story because the school was not even real. This raises a question. How was the coach fired if the school was not real? The school has a director as well. This school was proven not to be real after many investigated it after the game.

This article is really interesting because it questions whether there is any fact to it. The talk on Twitter is about firing someone from a fake job. Bishop Sycamore had a lot of junior college dropouts playing instead of high schoolers. They also had zero prospects. Roy Johnson also had an active warrant out for his arrest. The “school” had played two games in three days which puts players health in question. Nothing about this school adds up which is why it is one of the most talked about stories in sports. The story appeals to both students-athletes and parents of student-athletes everywhere. It also raises the question of how did ESPN and Geico get catfished with the technology that they are provided today. The lead is affective because no one knows how this can be true. That is enough to invest the audience. The article works because is summarizes the events and the stories that Bishop Sycamore has been involved in in the last few days.

TAV? The Alexander Ogorzaly Story

For many men and women, Thursday is just an ordinary day, but for Alexander, Thursday is Thirsty Thursday. In his great home known as Sioux City, there is a bar called Tav on the Ave that many Morningside Students spend their Thursday nights at. They chose to spend their Thursday nights there because they have $6 pitchers of beer. It used to be $5 once upon a time, but inflation. Due to the Pandemic, the demand for beer skyrocketed.

Alexander is a business major who played football at Morningside College for 3 years. During the spring playoff season, Alexander suffered a sever knee injury that kept him out for the remainder of the season. Alexander then made the biggest choice of his life. Football or happiness? Alexander chose happiness and now has all the time in the world for his senior year.

Alexander works at a bar in downtown Sioux City known as Bodega 401. Many of his friends chose to spend their Saturday nights down there because Bodega is arguably the best bar for college students in Sioux City. The Tav shines on Thursdays, but is often forgotten about on the weekends. Alexander should be getting paid by both bars as he brings in the majority of their business. He spreads the word about Thirsty Thursday, and eventually a bunch of students are drinking on a Thursday, not caring about their 8am on Friday. Alexander is a marketing wizard. The sells business to places that he does not even work at. He is a legend to the people and to the bars.
