How has photography changed? 1.19

https://www.washingtonpost.com/photography/interactive/2023/terrifying-images-aftermath-strike-dnipro/?itid=sf_photography

In this article, there are multiple photos that do a very nice job at painting the picture of what went down in Ukraine this last Saturday. Dnipro, a city in Ukraine was hit with Russian missile killing dozens of people. The photos in this article do such a nice job showing just have devastating the blast was. The message the was supposed to get across I believe got through. In my eyes, I think the person who wrote the article and took the photos wanted to show people what really is happening in the war in Ukraine right now.

As far as reproductive values go, I think the first photo is perfect. I think that the Washington Post is really trying to push for fear and to show people how bad things really are. I do think that this is a very good cover photo and would reproduce well on newspapers. The front page picture is suppose to grab the readers eye and that is a big reason I chose this story because the picture of all the smoke and debris and the firefighters working captured my eyes and wanted me to read more about it.

From an aesthetic stand point, I do not believe that any of these photos are that pleasing, however I do think that was the main purpose to take the photos like this. With war, I think the best thing the photographer can do is catch the rawness of the event. Show people what war really looks like with the best photos they can take given the circumstances. I think the photos have a very nice quality to them so they must’ve been shot with a nice camera.

My overall evaluation of the photos is very similar to the aesthetic part. The photos themselves are very chaotic and have a lot of parts in them. There are many different things that are happening in each photo that could draw your attention. My favorite photos in this were the ones of the civilians helping clean up debris so the fireman can save people.

Writing Assignment 1.17

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/16/world/asia/nepal-yeti-airlines-crash.html

In this article, the main topic that is being talked about is a plane crash. There are a couple of good photos here that really do a good job of adding to the story.

While discussing the plane crash, the articles also discusses the pilot of the plane who died in the crash who also had a husband that was a pilot who shred the same fate a year ago from when she was killed.

The first photo that is displayed is a image of the plane crash and it adds a lot of depth to the article. Showing the readers how bad the accident was in my opinion really brings out the emotional side of the readers to feel some sort of grief for all of the people affected.

There is also another photo of the family members of the victims who died in the crash all huddled together grieving. These pictures do a perfect job at illustrating what all happened and what went down during the crash.

The objectivity and the visuals of the photos helps show the reader what kind of story this is.

Article #4

A big brother is someone you should be able to look up to, that is exactly the person that Tanner Kollbaum wanted to be for his Younger brother. However, it wasn’t that easy, it takes a lot of patience and positive attitude along the way.

Tanner Kollbaum is 30 years old and has been an older brother for about 22 years now and he says that there are different things that you are able to see when you are a big brother. “It is fun to see your brother grow up in front of you and either make the same or different decisions as you and how they respond to the outcome.”

Tanner says watching his brother grow up was interesting because he was the only child before his brother Jonah was born so it was boring for him. “I remember just being by myself a lot and not enjoying it that, then my brother was born and everything was different from there.”

Tanner was involved in a lot of his little brothers life, like football. Both of the Kollbaum boys enjoyed playing football in their youth, Tanner was Jonahs youth football coach and taught him a lot. “Getting to teach my brother a lot of the things that I have learned from playing football for so long was fun, it is nice having someone look up to you and listen.

One of the biggest things that a big brother should try to do is teach their siblings the difference between right and wrong. Growing up, Tanner was an A+ student throughout school. He was always on top of his studies and says that he believes he tried to make sure his brother was the same.

“Whenever I would comeback from college to visit, I always would ask him how school was going and if he ever needed any help with anything to call me.” Tanner believes that it is his job as a big brother to make sure that his brother does not make the same mistakes that he made growing up.

Tanner says now that him and his brother are older and more mature it is nice to look back on the moments that they shared together growing up.

Holly Kollbaum, Jonah and Tanners mother says she was very blessed to have two sons that care for each other so much. “Ever since Jonah was a baby, Tanner always shared a special connection with him,” she also thinks “Tanner did a really nice job showing Jonah that sometimes life isn’t going to go your way, what is important is to keep going and believe in yourself.”

Tanner’s father, Chris, seemed to be the most surprised at how well of a big brother he is when he had a moment to sit back and reflect on it. “Tanner was a quiet shy kid growing up who didn’t really talk to a lot of people, so to see him with his brother having fun and growing up together really makes me a happy dad.”

Being a good big brother to some people may seem difficult. But for some people, such as Tanner Kollbaum, they seem to have the whole thing pretty well figured out. All you have to do is make sure to always remind your brother to be a good person and above all stay patient and positive.

This Monday, 24 year old Hamilton Veliz-Cantor was sentenced to 10 years in prison for stabbing a man during an attempted robbery.

Hamilton pleaded guilty in Woodbury County court to second degree robbery. The charges he received of going armed with intent and willful injury were dismissed in the case as a part of his plea agreement. Veliz-Cantor must serve five years before he is eligible for parole.

Veliz-Cantor stabbed a man that he had been following home after he had demanded the man for money and he rejected. Hamilton opened up a 14-inch cut across the mans head that thankfully was not life threatening

I enjoy this article because It gives you this whole persons life in the criminal justice system without all of the little details. It is more formed in a broader sense but to me I really enjoy it that way. Whoever wrote the article gave us: The crime, where the crime was, the sentence, parole option, and name of suspect.

I agreed with the writers choice of not adding the victims name into this passage as well. Overall I think that this was a well formulated article.

16 Year Old Polar Bear Found Dead Floating in pool at Midland Zoo

Homer, the oldest of the 3 polar bears at the zoo was found dead floating in the polar bear exhibit yesterday morning at 7 a.m. The other two polar bears were removed from the exhibit and are now being monitored by the veterinary staff.

As far as the cause of death it is still unknown what happened to Homer or how he died. Dr Shanda Lear, senior staff veterinarian, says that, “the zoo will perform a necropsy to try to determine the cause of death,” she also believes that, ” the results will not be available for several weeks.”

Homer is now the third animal that has died at the Midland Zoo in the past month, the other two animals were a giraffe and bobcat. “Animal welfare and the preservation of species are our primary goals here at the zoo,” says Chris Bacon director the zoo.

Polar bears have thrived at the Midland Zoo since 1985 and seems like they will continue to keep them at the zoo for a long time. The main goal of the exhibit is to inform people about these endangered animals and what we can do to protect them.

Company Launches Vegan Mac and Cheese

https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/grownas-foods-launches-with-flavor-forward-vegan-mac-and-cheese-that-doesnt-disappoint-301691682.html

The news of this story is that GrownAs* company has launched a new completely vegan Mac and Cheese and it is very good. The audience I would assume is for anyone that is vegan or wants to participate in vegan practices. I think that the benefit the reader would get is a little more knowledge on the company GrownAs* because they go into some detail about there company and what they are about.

The benefit to the company is that they will get to the media and let people know that they have a new product out and they are proud of it. They want to promote it because I think that they know Mac and Cheese is a pretty favorable meal and a lot of people will like it.

This story is similar to other stories I have down for this class because it has details and gives information to the reader like most of the stories or articles I have covered. A lot of the articles that we do are very similar.

https://omaha.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/13-year-old-arrested-in-connection-with-fatal-shooting-of-another-boy-in-omaha/article_30c3bdee-6f83-11ed-8209-47da829fd38a.html

On Monday in Omaha Nebraska, a 13 year old boy was arrested in connection with the death of another 13 year old boy who’s body was found in September, Lenny Rodriguez.

The boy that was arrested was already in custody before-hand at the Douglas County Youth Center for charges relating to robbery and gun chargers as well. Currently, he is being arrested on the charge of first degree murder, use of a firearm to commit a felony, and tampering with the evidence.

Police had reported that they received a call the night the found Lenny on reports of gunshots in the area. When the police had arrived they found Lenny’s body on the street nearby. Once the rescue squad and ambulance had came, authorities rushed to the nearest hospital but it was to late, Lenny was pronounced dead.

This to me is a very eery story, a 13 year old shooting another 13 year old, you do not hear about that a lot in the criminal justice system. I do not know why the little boy thought he had to shoot the other kid, but I know that there had to be a better option than that.

It makes me upset to see the youth be so poisoned by the world at such a young age, the only thing 13 year olds should be worried about is what’s for lunch and homework. Surely there is something that we can do to help prevent crimes like this from ever happening again.

As far as the story goes I think that it is very well written and every sentence kept me entertained and wanting to read the next part. The title also did a nice job at capturing my attention. Like I said previously, it is not everyday that you hear about a 13 year old who shot another 13 year old, so when I saw it I knew I had to write about it.

Morningside wins GPAC home opener basketball game

https://www.msidemustangs.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/releases/20221113yv8u4n

This story talks about how the mens basketball team was able to get an easy win against Dakota Wesleyan, a GPAC rival opponent. I would consider this to be news because the basketball team has a lot of followers around them. I also think that putting information about the basketball team and how they are doing throughout the year is important for recruiting. A lot of people go on the website to see what Morningside is about, and when they see that the basketball team wins games, they know exactly what the basketball is about.

Another potential audience is students on campus because a lot of people are in class and don’t have time to make it to the games so posting that information about the games can be for them.

The readers will gain a little sense of who the team consists of and who their starters are. I also think the readers will gain a sense of knowledge on how the team plays their game.

Morningside as a College gains an opportunity to let people who come onto their that athletics is taken very seriously here and just because we are an NAIA school, it does not mean we can’t show and promote our teams as well.
