Depression: Science Scavenger Hunt

Are you able to bounce back from depression? Over the last few years science has illustrated that depression may be a larger problem than we would have thought. There still is very little knowledge on what curative steps can be taken to each individual person.

Benedict Carey presented information within his article, “What’s Life Like After Depression? Surprisingly, Little Is Known.” through New York times. Carey made it clear that there is still a lot that needs to be learned through test, as well as trial and error to be able to help people. Every case has its own problems. “A drug that helps one person can make another worse. The same goes for talk therapies.”

It is stated that a lot of the problem is where doctors are looking for answers. In most cases doctors are looking at people who are currently depressed. The argument that Carey makes is, maybe doctors need to be evaluating people who once suffered from depression and have recovered. The problems in this cure come from different inconsistencies. Everybody is different. This means that people are not going to be reacting the same way, and because this is mental, there is no definite or consistent answer.

There have been many people that have been able to come out of the depression that they are feeling, but its a very different success story for everyone. Some people swear on the pills that they had been taking. Others rely on weekly therapy. This is what makes this such a hard issue to crack. As time goes on and more is learned about the mind, breakthroughs will continue to be made.

Just let us park

There are many really frustrating things that come to mind when I think of Morningside campus. This could range from having to walk from class to class with little time to get there, or the blistering cold of a Sioux city winter. The thing that stands out tremendously for me is the Morningside College parking situation.

Morningside College has done a horrific job over the years in dealing with the parking situation they have at hand. I have gotten the chance to talk to a few fellow students on campus that think a change needs to be made. There is absolutely not enough parking spots, and it costs too much money to purchase a parking pass. The student parking pass costs $95 and there is very little reward from it.

One of the people that I was able to interview over the topic was Cameron Williams, a junior at Morningside. He stated that, “it is ridiculous how campus security uses their power to make everyone else’s lives harder. Last year they just ended up putting a boot on my car because I was parked illegally.”

This really doesn’t seem like something that campus security should be able to do. Not only that, but this year they have been authorized to give out tickets from the city. This seems like an overuse of power. Especially from students who are given the ability to write these tickets to other students.

When living on campus, this can be a huge dilemma as well. When I lived in Dimmit, parking was a huge pain. This is because the only place that these residents are aloud to park is in the small Dimmit parking lot, and along the street. I don’t see the point of having to buy a parking permit if I am going to have to put my car along the street anyway. This really becomes a problem when it gets cold out.

As a commuter I have to drive to campus everyday and there is only one parking lot that I am aloud to park in. When it gets cold, everybody is going to be leaving their cars along the street and there is going to be no where for me to set my car during the school day. Another person that I was able to talk to actually works for campus security, Maron stated that, “some of these people abuse the small amount of power they have. They will write so many tickets a day that we will run out.” A solution needs to be created to deal with this problem. The school needs to either create more spots, or alter the rules that they have created.

I have known many people over my four years here that have gotten up above a thousand dollars in parking tickets over the course of one semester. That is just outrageous. For the amount of money that these students pay to go to school here, there has to be a better system put into place.  It seems like the students are getting conned out of money once again by the school. Morningside is consistently giving students unnecessary charges just to bring in extra money. Most of these students, including myself have very little money to start with. This just seems like another scam that the college is trying to put on their students. The last person I was able to interview was sophomore, Alex Thomson. He stated that, “I didn’t even end up buying the parking pass this year. They seem to give you tickets no matter what you do with your car.”

From what I have heard, the majority of the students at Morningside are very annoyed with what is going on with campus security and our parking situation. This is something that needs to be fixed, especially if more kids are going to be coming in. The school is consistently talking about creating an environment that kids want to be a part of, but there needs to be enough parking to take in more students. Morningside college is a very expensive school to go to, which means there needs to be parking and sufficient space for the amount of students that they are looking for.

Hurricane Michael

Over the years Florida has suffered many hurricanes, but hurricane Michael is the most recent devastator, being the third most powerful storm on record.

I was able to find a news video coming straight from Panama City where most of the damage is happing. ABC news was able to cover the destruction live, and visually show how much destruction Florida has overcome.

There are very large shortages of water and power throughout the state, and people are coming together to work towards fixing everything that they can.

In another article on ABC news they cover many of the numbers and statistics that have gone with the storm. Some of these numbers include casualties, wind speed and inches of precipitation.

Some of the content is different between the two articles whereas the video really focuses on the visual aspect of damage and what people are doing to help the cause. The article focuses more on how much damage has happened and exactly what areas are taking the hardest damage.

The length of both storied are very similar even though they are not going over the exact same information. These stories each cover their own take of the incident which helps to get all of the information across.

The lead for the video seemed to give more detail before the camera was set on the on site reporter. It was able to discuss what information was going to be presented, who the article was about, and where the most damage was located.

Love For All

Love is an idea that is engraved in every person. No matter how much people try to fight it, it is somewhere deep within, Everyone wants somebody to love them, but sometimes this can be tricky for kids who have ended up within a foster care program.

Today I had the pleasure of speaking with Paster Andy Nelson, Director of campus Administries at Morningside College. Paster Nelson has been involved with the foster program for just over a year now, and has made a definite impact on two children lives already. He explained the idea of “radical love” today which was something that I was not familiar with. This is the idea to spread love and humanity throughout your day to day lives as much as possible. Being a foster parent really shows his belief in this idea.

Paster Nelson stated how much he like the act of helping others. He explains, “Christianity has something important to say to the world, it has something important to say about our identity, and it has something important to say on how we treat and care for the people around us.”

Making this sacrifice can make a huge impact on a kids life in a positive way. Paster Nelson explained that he only has had foster children for small placements of about a year. This is the time when their actual parents are able to sort out the issues that are at hand, and get their own lives together without affecting the Childs. Many times this has to do with addiction or negligence and this foster program can be a stepping stone to helping kids grow happily as well as bring families back together.

It was stated that when many posters talk to kids about things such as faith, the real message is directed at adults in the area. He believes that it is important to give kids direct messages just as we do to adults. These ideas can skew influence kids, and help teach right from wrong.

Helping kids to get a grasp on their own lives is something that many people can’t say they would do. There are many struggles when having kids from different families or backgrounds but at the end of the day this will make a very helpful impact.

Spreading love shouldn’t have to be a chore, this is an idea that everyone should grasp onto. This could make our society a much better place to live in.
