Just let us park

There are many really frustrating things that come to mind when I think of Morningside campus. This could range from having to walk from class to class with little time to get there, or the blistering cold of a Sioux city winter. The thing that stands out tremendously for me is the Morningside College parking situation.

Morningside College has done a horrific job over the years in dealing with the parking situation they have at hand. I have gotten the chance to talk to a few fellow students on campus that think a change needs to be made. There is absolutely not enough parking spots, and it costs too much money to purchase a parking pass. The student parking pass costs $95 and there is very little reward from it.

One of the people that I was able to interview over the topic was Cameron Williams, a junior at Morningside. He stated that, “it is ridiculous how campus security uses their power to make everyone else’s lives harder. Last year they just ended up putting a boot on my car because I was parked illegally.”

This really doesn’t seem like something that campus security should be able to do. Not only that, but this year they have been authorized to give out tickets from the city. This seems like an overuse of power. Especially from students who are given the ability to write these tickets to other students.

When living on campus, this can be a huge dilemma as well. When I lived in Dimmit, parking was a huge pain. This is because the only place that these residents are aloud to park is in the small Dimmit parking lot, and along the street. I don’t see the point of having to buy a parking permit if I am going to have to put my car along the street anyway. This really becomes a problem when it gets cold out.

As a commuter I have to drive to campus everyday and there is only one parking lot that I am aloud to park in. When it gets cold, everybody is going to be leaving their cars along the street and there is going to be no where for me to set my car during the school day. Another person that I was able to talk to actually works for campus security, Maron stated that, “some of these people abuse the small amount of power they have. They will write so many tickets a day that we will run out.” A solution needs to be created to deal with this problem. The school needs to either create more spots, or alter the rules that they have created.

I have known many people over my four years here that have gotten up above a thousand dollars in parking tickets over the course of one semester. That is just outrageous. For the amount of money that these students pay to go to school here, there has to be a better system put into place.  It seems like the students are getting conned out of money once again by the school. Morningside is consistently giving students unnecessary charges just to bring in extra money. Most of these students, including myself have very little money to start with. This just seems like another scam that the college is trying to put on their students. The last person I was able to interview was sophomore, Alex Thomson. He stated that, “I didn’t even end up buying the parking pass this year. They seem to give you tickets no matter what you do with your car.”

From what I have heard, the majority of the students at Morningside are very annoyed with what is going on with campus security and our parking situation. This is something that needs to be fixed, especially if more kids are going to be coming in.
