The Best (Coffee Shop) In Town

(5.1.17) By Jaclyn Arens – Coffee shops are great places to do homework, talk with friends, go on dates, and most importantly, get coffee. Because of this, college students heavily frequent coffee shops. Similar to athletic team ties, some people have fierce loyalties to certain cafes.

18236486_1271631926224500_596327576_oI asked Morningside students what their favorite coffee shop was and why to discover which one was the best place in town.

Stone Bru is located at 4243 Gordon Dr., Sioux City, IA 51106. Stone Bru is known for their organic espresso, and it is a locally owned business. It is also the closest coffee shop to Morningside’s campus.

Emily Houlsworth says that Stone Bru is her favorite coffee shop in town because they use organic products, and because she is a proponent of supporting local businesses.

She says, “I also think their coffee tastes better than most other places.”

Her favorite drink is the chai tea latte with a shot of espresso.

Joelle Kruger also thinks that Stone Bru is the best in town.

She says, “I like Stone Bru because it’s close, and Jesus Yanez Iniquez (a recent Morningside graduate) is the best barista.”

She adds that she doesn’t go very often, but when she does, she likes to walk. Her favorite drink is a dark chocolate and raspberry latte half sweetened.

Niccole Wolken frequents Stone Bru because it’s cheap, delicious, and the staff is always friendly.

She says, “Supporting local businesses is the way to go in my opinion!”

Hana Krommenhoek adds that she likes Stone Bru because it’s unique, and they have options that other places don’t have. For example, they serve nitro brew, which is cold brew coffee infused with nitrogen. Hana also says that she appreciates that Stone Bru’s espresso is organic.

The Grind Café and Lounge is also a local coffee shop located at 511 4th St, Sioux City, IA 51101. The Grind has ample seating, which makes it a great place to study. They also serve breakfast, lunch, and homemade bakery items including cupcakes from the locally owned business Kustom Kupcakes.

Josh Doering states, “The Daily Grind is head and shoulders above the competition.”

He explains that it’s the best because of its location on 4th street, which makes it a prime spot to go in between networking events. He also enjoys that they specialize in cupcakes and normally have samples available.

Pierce Street Coffee Works is located at 1920 Pierce St, Sioux City, IA 51104. According to their Facebook page, they are the oldest coffee shop in Sioux City.

Dominique Swanson votes that Coffee Works is the best in town because their ambiance is nice, and she enjoys their coffee.

She says, “I like the distance from campus because it’s a change of scenery, and I normally go there for friend dates or to do homework.”

Sarah Yankowski thinks Coffee Works is the best because of their great atmosphere.

She says, “I know the owner and a few baristas, and I love that all the artwork is by the owner!” She adds that she enjoys getting away from campus, and she says, “They always have such great coffee drinks that are unique and original.”

Jitters is locally owned and located at 306 Virginia St D, Sioux City, IA 51101. They serve breakfast and lunch and are best known for their doughnuts.

 Hope Philbrick thinks Jitters is the best because of their delicious doughnuts.

She says, “I also like the atmosphere, and that they have a lot of places to sit.”

Lakeport Commons Starbucks is a corporate Starbucks location on 4735 Sergeant Rd, Sioux City, IA 51106. They serve pastries, sandwiches, and wraps, and Starbucks is the most popular coffee chain in the United States.

 Rachel Potter goes to Starbucks to do homework and because she enjoys their atmosphere.

She says, “I normally go to Starbucks with friends because we can redeem gift cards, and they have a lot of places to sit so we can hang out there for a while.” Her favorite drink is the strawberry acai refresher.

There are benefits to each of these coffee shops, and they all have their own loyal regulars.
