One minute of Terror for Local Store Owner

Bj’s Drug store was robbed last night as store owner, Barney Joseph Jr, was held at gunpoint around 8:30pm.

Two masked men entered the store and successfully robbed the store by walking out with over 380 dollars in cash. The robbery took less than one minute as they exited to their already running car the store owner said.

Joseph had a weapon behind the counter but choose not to use it as he did not want the situation to turn out like the one his father was in 25 years ago. Joseph father pulled a gun on robbers 25 years ago and the result was him being shot to death in his own store.

When Joseph was asked about this he said, I’d rather part way with money than my life.”

Controversial Texas Abortion Law -Draft

The State of Texas recently passed a new abortion law that can be enforced by just about any citizen.

The new law states that abortions can no longer take place after six weeks from the pregnant person’s last menstural cycle. The government is not enforcing this law as it requires citizens to enforce by suing.

Some feel that this law basically eliminates abortions in the state of Texas. Especially due to the fact many women in the United States do not know that they are pregnant by 6 weeks.

Under these laws it makes it almost impossible for someone to get an abortion. For a woman to try to get a judicial bypass is very difficult and some may say impossible. Once the teeneager is able to get infront of the a judge and plead her case as why she should be allowed to get an abortion, the judge now has 5 days to make his decision.

If the judge denies her case, the woman now has no other options but to have the baby. This is due to the fact that an appeal process would take too long.

Many people are upset due to the fact people who were raped have few options to abort the child. Although the Texas Governor, Greg Abbot says, “It provides at least six weeks for a person to be able to get an abortion.” The reason people are upset is that many women do not know they are pregnant till at least four weeks.

The toll on women may be the worst thing for these women as a study of a large number of women found that women who were forced to have the child suffered extreme physical and mental concerns. The concern does not just stop there it also continues with financial struggles.

The Washington Post Reported that this new law in Texas may be spreading into other states throughout the United States. It is reported that seven states have considered copying Texas’ new abortion law.

The law is protected from the Supreme Court since the law is enforced by private Citizens. This was purposefully designed to withstand any unconstitutional claims.

Sonia Sotomayer, a Supreme Court Justice, said, “an extraordinary step of enlisting private citizens to do what the State could not.” Nothing in this law has been proven to be unconstitutional even though many do not agree with the law.
An important part is when a lawsuit is filed, the civilian is suing the person or place that gives performs the abortion not the patient.

Overall, there are many different opinions in the United States about this abortion law. There will never be the same opinion on this issue so this problem will continiue for years to come.

Sioux City Bans hand-held radar guns

Yesterday, the East Dakota Highway patrol banned the use of hand held radar guns in Sioux City, Iowa. The reason behind such ban is due to the risk of troopers developing cancer of longterm exposure from these radars. There are currently studies going to over the radition that emitted from these guns and if they can be connected to cancer.

The East Dakota Highway Patrol is doing this as a precaitionary action but this will remove 70 radar guns from the area. Although the Patrol will not have these guns there is still radar units on the outside of their cars allowing them to see the speed of cars.

The East Dakota Patrol is choosing to be on side of caution until is more information is found out about the issue. Some day we may see these 70 radars back in action on the Sioux City Streets.

Inspiring Comeback of Mackenzie Milton

Adrea Adelson wrote this article about Mackenzie Milton’s impressive return to the game of football. Mckenzie Milton suffered a catastrophic leg injury that took 34 months to recover from. Milton was unlikely to ever play football again especially after a severe infection that almost led to Milton’s leg being amputated. Despite all of these setbacks, Mackenzie’s name was called in the fourth quarter versus Notre Dame. He led Florida State from down 10 points to force overtime. All the Florida State fell just short in overtime versus a top 10 team Milton made a huge statement to the world. Milton proved that not only did he overcome a major injury, but he can still play quarterback at a very high level.
The author, Adrea Adelson, did an amazing job explaining the history of Milton’s college football career to prove her point of how amazing this comeback story is. She used great detail and quotes to show readers that Milton almost lost his leg and was never supposed to play football again. This was a crucial part of the story as it made what he did in the game even crazier. Although he did not win his stats showed that he is still able to play at such a high level. The injury in my opinion is what draws readers in as most people love a crazy comeback story. Overall, I feel like the author did a good job of explaining the history to truly show the importance of this story in the sports world.
Football fans are all intrigued by this story due to the history of Mackenzie Milton. Milton was arguably one of the best quarterbacks in college football as he led the University of Central Florida to an undefeated season and a new year six bowl win. Many people thought Milton would never play football again due to the severity of his injury, which makes this comeback story inspiring to many people. College Football fans usually appreciate a story like this due to the inspiration they can draw from it.

Cam Newton Loses Two Jobs in One Day – Tyler Strauss

This article was written by Ben Shpigel and Ken Belson in the New York Times talks about how Cam Newton was cut from the New England Patriots on Tuesday. Cam lost the starting job to Mac Jones and was cut from the team which came as a surprise to many fans. Cam Newton was once the N.F.L’s most valuable player while also leading the Carolina Panthers to a super bowl. Newton was the starter of all three preseason games. Some of the reasons Newton was cut was due to the N.F.L’s covid protocols. Cam missed multiple games last year due to covid and this year missed practice due to him not following protocols.

The authors of this article did a great job of explaining the situation the patriots were in and the history of Cam Newton. The history of Cam Newton with the covid protocols and how he is not vaccinated was explained in good detail. This was very crucial to the story as it shows why Cam Newton was no longer needed for the New England Patriots. The title is what drew my interest and the author did a great job of keeping the readers intrigued. Overall, the author did a great job of writing this story on Cam Newton.

Fan’s feel this article is pretty big news in the world of sports especially in the National Football League. Cam Newton was once a top player in the world of sports and nobody would have seen this coming 5 years ago. The league is always in a constant state of change which makes news like this important for fans to keep upon. In conclusion, passionate fans of the N.F.L. care about information like this which makes it newsworthy for many people in the United States.

Zach Olson

Zach Olson is a 19-year-old sophomore here at Morningside University. He is originally from Omaha, Nebraska where he was born and raised. Zach attended Millard West High school and graduated in 2020. Zach grew up in a more traditional family household with one older sibling and both parents. His mother works for Nebraska Methodist and his father is an independent contractor. Zach always had a passion for sports which is one of the reasons he chose to come to Morningside University.
Zach came to Morningside for many reasons and so far has had a great experience through his first year. One of the reasons he came to Morningside is because he had a lot of friends who he played with also coming here. This is a huge reason why his time at Morningside has been so good. Another reason he came to Morningside was he felt like it was the right fit for him due to the culture of the school and more specifically the basketball program. After his freshman year, he decided it was time to step away from playing basketball, and now he is stepping into a new position as a student coach.
Zach’s passion for sports has led him to be a big college sports fan. He grew up watching Iowa Football and Creighton Basketball. He grew up at a perfect time in Creighton Basketball history as he got to watch Doug Mcdermott, who is one of the best players to ever go to Creighton. Zach had this to say about Doug, “He made a lot of threes, had a lot of energy, and I overall wanted to base my style of play off of him. This was because I really respected the way he played and his work ethic.” Zach’s passion for sports is a big part of who he is as a person.
