October 5th, 2020

With the COVID-19 outbreak the Men’s Volleyball team is wondering if they are going to have a season this year. Head Coach for the Men’s Volleyball team Theison Anderson said, “We are still uncertain if our season is even going to happen because what is happening during the women’s season.”

Leaving the Men’s Team uncertain off when the season starts. Men’s Volleyball up to this point is waiting on GPAC commissioner approval of even having a season this summer. Talking to Tommy Looper, a senior, of the Men’s Volleyball team said, “ I was thinking about staying at Morningside for one more year and use my COVID year this year, but without even knowing if there is going to be a season I’m just going to graduate this fall and go back home”.

When talking to Head Coach Anderson about this he said, “I’m just going to have to get kids to come in the summer.”

With this Theison Anderson also said, “it has been hard to recruit assistant coaches to fill out the new coaching staff. Leading into who can drive cars for the trips when we go out of town. Not many people on the coaching staff want to go out of town because of COVID.”

Making the first-year coach look into more expensive options of travel in case the coach staff does not fill out by the time season starts for the Men’s Volleyball team.

It has been hard on the Men’s volleyball coach to bring in new recruit’s because many of them are afraid of catching COVID-19 by coming to the school. Talking to Jacob Campa, a freshman, of the Men’s Volleyball team, he said, “It sucks for the program because with having a new coach its hard on him to bring in kids for the team”.

Which is understandable since the Men’s Coach is in his first year here a Morningside. There is hope though that the men’s season might start up because of how the woman’s season is going.

Theison Anderson said, “With how the woman’s season going as it is. I was finally able to get the school to let you guys come back in January for preseason”.

The school was hesitating about letting the Men’s Volleyball Team back on campus early because the COVID outbreak. While also, trying to figure out how to cover the Men’s Volleyball team with food because during the break the contract with the food people does not apply during the break. It was able to get done though thanks to the woman’s season going by so well right now with not many teams backing out due to COVID.

During the practices new guidelines are going to be put into place to help stop the spread of COVID. During warmups people are required to wear a mask but, are allowed to take them off when we are about to start practice. With these new guidelines Coaches have to wear masks through the whole practice time.

If all goes according to plan the GPAC commissioner should be releasing a statement about how the Men’s volleyball season should go. Theison Anderson said, “we are all just waiting on the commissioner statement. When we get the ok from him that when the stress of knowing the season is a go will go away.”
