Business Students Pilot Second Year Experience

Stoney CreekBy Alyssa Nehring–All campus event days are usually seen as days where students can turn off their alarms and hope they get up in time for lunch.

However, on February 9 sophomore business students were up and meeting with local businesses exploring possible career options. Students got to see the inner workings of Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Morgan Stanley Cooperate Offices, and Stoney Creek Hotel. The different businesses set up presentations and where ready for questions from the students.

This field trip is a part of the Second Year Experience. The Second Year Experience is a program made for sophomore students with three goals in mind. First, to help students find their purpose as a college-educated professional. Second, to learn more about their chosen major and aid the student in preparing for their future career. And finally to encourage engagement on campus to help build skills to aid in personal and professional success. So far, the Second Year Experience is a pilot program in the business and biology departments only.

“We started talking about the second year experience a year or so ago and we are using it as a continuance of the new Krone Advising Program. We are looking for a good match for students. If they are happy they will stay and have a good Morningside experience. And we are looking to help with making a prefect and giving them the experience,” said Pam Mickelson, Chair of the Business Administration department.

Mickelson explains the class Accounting 204 is required for every student majoring in business. Generally speaking, 80 percent of the students enrolled in that class are second year business students or declared their major late. This is something unique to the business department.

The first trial was successful with a few hiccups and many opportunities for improvements. The business department welcomed the students with open arms and enjoyed being able to be a part of the pilot program and would like to continue the relationship.
