By Kara Bentz–Juan Pablo Jochems Zabata came to Sioux City from a village in Holland called Apeldoorn. This is where he grew up and it is where he feels safe. However, he came to Iowa to attend Morningside College and continue his passion: soccer.
Juan Pablo has been playing soccer for twelve years. Growing up, all of his cousins and friends would play soccer together, so he joined in. He used to swim, play tennis, and golf; however, soccer eventually became the only sport he played.
In 2013, Juan Pablo moved to Columbia to play with a team for one year. This was a memorable experience for him in his soccer career. He explained, “I had the opportunity there to practice with a professional team. That was definitely my best experience I have had in soccer.”
He has had soccer-related opportunities before, but playing at Morningside College while being able to study is a first for him. It is a large reason why he chose to come to America.
This is a new experience because sports abroad are different from sports in America. Juan Pablo said, “In the Netherlands there are clubs where you can play in leagues, but sports are not combined with school like they are here.” The chance to play soccer for Morningside College and study biology has been a great opportunity for this freshman starter.
While playing midfield in the Mustangs’ 10 previous games, he has attempted 10 shots and 7 shots on the goal. He has also made 4 assists and 1 goal. Juan has contributed to the team’s record of 6-3 by offering his skills, but he also helps the team by continually showing his love for the game. “The experience of being on the field and playing the game is my favorite thing. I forget everything the moment I step on the field which helps me to relax.”
Juan is looking forward to continuing the season with such a strong team.
