Spikers split weekend games in Omaha

By Gabi French–Morningside has become good at coming back from deficits. The Mustangs came back from a 2-1 deficit this weekend to beat Grace University. “It wasn’t clean volleyball, but we got the job done,” Coach Beth Donnelly said.

The Mustangs had plenty of season highs in their game against Grace; they accumulated 65 kills, 105 digs, and 13.5 blocks in their victory. Once again Jayde Bergmann was huge for the Mustangs where she pounded 13 kills followed by Jenn Buyert who was behind her with 12. Aneisha Ford and Morgan Whitehead were just short of double figures with nine kills. London Bockenstedt and Nikki Yablonski, each had six kills.

Torie Sykes led the offense with a match-high 58 assists to go along with her season high digs of 17. Morgan Gourley was tremendous for the Mustangs where she had a match and career-high 43 digs. 

“I felt like I was reading their hitters very well. The block helped out a lot by leaving me holes in the block,” Gourley said. Gabi French was next for the Mustangs where she produced 15 digs to join Gourley and Sykes.

Bergmann and Ford were huge for the Mustangs on blocking. Bergmann had a season-high eight block assists, while Ford had one solo block and seven block assists.

The Mustangs’ second match was against Peru State. The Mustangs lost 25-19, 25-18, 25-22.

Buyert paced the Mustangs with 10 kills for her sixth double figure performance of the season. Bergmann followed was next with eight kills, followed by Ford with six and Ashley Vande Stowe with five.

Gourley and French led the Mustangs defensively with 17 and 12 digs. Ford and Vande Stowe each had four block assists to lead blocking for the Mustangs.

Torie Sykes led the Mustangs with 30 assists, Hannah Roberg had three of the four aces for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs are now 7-16 and will head back into GPAC play, Tuesday, October 20 against Dakota Wesleyan.
