By Dominique Swanson—“Faking It” is another cheesy and overly dramatic teen show or a sign that our culture is moving forward?
“Faking It” is a MTV original series that follows two teenage best friends on their quest for popularity. Their fame finally strikes when they are mistaken for being a lesbian couple and decide to run with it.
Although it may not have wide appeal for adults, Karma and Amy give modern day teens that are questioning their sexuality a sign that what they are going through is not all that uncommon.
Karma, who is desperately infatuated with a popular boy in school, is the driving force behind carrying on the lesbian façade. Amy originally did not want anything to do with it but decided to do it for her best friend. Now after having kissed for the very first time to prove their relationship to the school, Amy begins to question if she might be in love with Karma.
This show, unlike others of its kind, centers on non-traditional relationships like gay/lesbian and an environment where they are completely normal and accepted. No matter what generation teens are sure to question their feelings if going through something like this and this series shows them that it is okay to do this.
It is refreshing to see that television is catching up and becoming a more truthful representation of modern times.
Of course, the series is not entirely perfect. It still represents extreme stereotypes and over-dramatized teen behavior. That being said, it would be nearly impossible to find a teen oriented show that does not over exaggerate their behavior.
This series is definitely not meant to target adults and would not be found interesting by them. For teens on the other hand, it holds wide appeal and is highly recommended for its fresh take on relationships.
