By Taylor Pluim—Dark Fall is a documentary style film that gives insight to a group of New Jersey surfers who are somewhat misunderstood. The film shows their life as surfers during the different seasons and a little bit of what they do when they’re not catching waves.
Although this may not have been a blockbuster hit, it is very well done documentary covering the life of these surfers. They receive a lot of criticism just because they are from New Jersey and have to work harder than most to earn their respect in the sport.
One thing this documentary does very well is show the skill it takes to be a surfer, along with the dangers that come with it. Many people perceive surfing to be a summer sport and something that anyone can go do just to have fun, but it is actually a very difficult and exhausting sport.
Another interesting thing about the film is when it shows these surfers during the winter months. You might think they have to take a break during the winter, but it is actually the best season for surfing in Jersey. This is because of the winter storms that role through the area causing bigger waves. But as you can imagine, surfing during the winter is cold. They go out in 33-degree water and freezing weather conditions in order to do what they love. This shows how dedicated they are to the sport and what it takes to pursue the dream they have.
This documentary would be a very good film to watch for anyone who likes ESPN’s 30 for 30 films. It does a very good job of showing their surfing lifestyle along with showing a lot of personal interviews, which give even deeper insight into their lives. It is one hour and twelve minutes long.
