By Jenni Beaver—Maria Bohling is a 2015 Morningside College graduate, and starting in August, her post-graduation plans are kicking off with a flight to Honduras.
Bohling is currently finishing up a double major in biology and chemistry with a minor in psychology, and just like most graduates she was on the hunt for a job. Medical school is in the long-term plan, but from August 2015 until June 2016, she is taking a slight detour.
“My plan after graduation is to teach biology and chemistry to high school students in Honduras,” Bohling explained.
International teaching was not her first idea for the future, but an email from Stacie Hays changed her thought process.
“I read the email and did some research and realized this would be a wonderful opportunity for me… I hope to make an impact on the children that I teach and have them develop a love for the sciences that is similar to my own,” Bohling said.
While the teaching will be the top priority, that’s not the only thing Bohling is excited about.
“It [the teaching] would allow me to see the world while I am still young… I am most excited about going to a country I have never been to and seeing the lifestyle and cultural changes,” said Bohling.
While the opportunity to touch kids’ lives and travel throughout a new country sounds amazing to Bohling, she still has some nerves about the new arrangement. She expressed her fear by saying, “I’m most nervous about the teaching aspect since I never thought I would be teaching students about anything. I hope that I’m able to teach the course work in the correct manner so that the students can understand and remember the information I taught them.”
In less than two weeks, Morningside College will be saying goodbye to the seniors and welcome another group of students into the alumi club. Among those journeying into the real world is Maria Bohling. Biology and Chemistry double major and future international teacher, Bohling summed up her hopes for the next phase of her life by saying, “I hope to learn more about myself through international travel as well as going to a county less fortunate than the U.S. and immersing myself in the culture.”
