App Review: QuizUp

indexBy Kayla Perkins—Fans of trivia and competition look no further because QuizUp is the game for you. Inspired by Trivial Pursuit, QuizUp is a competitive trivia game similar in game style to Trivia Crack. However, QuizUp allows its users to choose from its multitude of categories to compete against others in real time rather than by turns. There are hundreds of topics to choose from, and with thousands of questions, this app allows its users to customize their gameplay to their hobbies and preferences.

QuizUp is a real time competitive trivia game developed by Plain Vanilla Games. You can choose from different categories, such as music, sports, and science. In those categories are specific topics, such as Disney, birds, and space. This allows the app’s users to customize the questions they would like to compete on, giving them the ability to focus on things they enjoy. The app is available for download for iOS and Android.

Each user is paired up with another to compete in six ten-second rounds, with the last turn being worth double the points. The user with the higher score wins, and is awarded points to level up. Each level increases your overall rank in the game. There is a ranking system for each topic, including worldwide, country, and state rankings. These rankings are categorized per month and overall.

I regularly play QuizUp, and thoroughly enjoy that it has so many categories to compete in. Currently I focus on the Marvel Cinematic Universe category, because I know a lot about it and it is a fun topic for me. I would definitely recommend this app, because there is a category for everyone. It is also fun to play with friends or by yourself with a random opponent.

I am giving this app an 8/10, because there are a few drawbacks. With the game being in real time people can back out and ending the game early. There is also the possibility of connectivity issues though I haven’t had any problems. However, the biggest issue I saw was that users are paired up randomly rather than by their level. This means that it is theoretically possible for a level one user to be paired with the number one player in that category. On the other hand, levels show more of how much the user has played rather than the amount of knowledge they have on the topic.
