Morningsiders get “Trashy” for Eco Art Show

Morningside-Eco-Art-Show-2By Kayla Samek—In honor of Earth Day, the Morningside College Art Department and the Environmental Sustainability Committee are sponsoring an art show competition with the theme of environmental sustainability. The show started at 1pm in the Hickam-Furrow Library on Friday, April 10th. The exhibit runs April 10th-24th, with the reception and awards on the 16th.

There will be a 75-dollar prize for each category. The two categories are art about ecology or being responsible to the environment and art made from recyclable material or trash. Students, faculty, and staff were allowed to submitted one art piece per category. The judges for the contest for best piece in each category are Morningside College instructor Steve Paulson and Jeanne Bockholt with the Sierra Club.

Karen Johnson, the circulation manager and member of Environmental Sustainability Committee is the creator of the show. Johnson said “We wanted to do something where ecology and art meet.”

This is the first year of the art show competition, taking the place of the Trashion Show from past years.
