By Kayla Samek–On the 206th birthday of Charles Darwin, Morningside’s Biology Honors Society, Beta Beta Beta is putting on “Darwin Day.” On Thursday, February 12th, the day will be full of Darwin-inspired activities, such as a Darwin-themed Valentine’s Day cards and a “survival of the fittest” carnival. There will also be a showing of the movie Osmosis Jones at 7pm in Yockey. The day is planned to get students to enjoy themselves while appreciating Darwin’s contributions to the sciences.
Darwin Day is celebrated around the world, but this year is Morningside’s first year of celebration. Beta Beta Beta’s goal of “promoting the appreciation of biological study” and “celebrating science and reason in general” fits well with the mission of Darwin Day, said student president Audri Swisher. She credits Beta Beta Beta’s faculty advisor Dr. Aaron Bunker for suggesting the event be brought to Morningside. As Charles Darwin’s findings not only influenced the sciences but “philosophy, religion, the arts, humanities, and many other disciplines” so bringing Darwin Day “to liberal art college such as Morningside seemed, well, only natural” said Bunker.
According to darwinday.org, the mission of Darwin Day is to “inspire people throughout the globe to reflect and act on the principles of intellectual bravery, perpetual curiosity, scientific thinking, and hunger for truth.” Beta Beta Beta hopes to bring that spirit to Morningside, and have a day of fun activities as well.
