By Taylor Pluim–For anyone who went into withdrawal after the ending of the series Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul is the cure. Better Call Saul is a spinoff of the series that depicts the life of Walter White’s lawyer, Saul Goodman. It explains his life prior to his meeting with the famous meth cook and how he got to be the criminal lawyer he was during the show.
The long awaited series premiered last night and did not disappoint. It opened by showing how he is living after the ultimate demise of Mr. White, but I won’t go into details about that in case you haven’t watched Breaking Bad. But after the opener it goes into his early life as a lawyer. Before he became the infamous Saul Goodman, he was James McGill, a struggling lawyer trying to pay his dues before opening up his own law firm.
Since the spinoff series was started by the same creator as Breaking Bad, Vince Gilligan, it really gives you a sense of the series Breaking Bad, with the exclusion of Walter White and the other main characters of the series. It also gives you a sense of satisfaction by seeing the classic character of Saul Goodman, even before he became a corrupted lawyer.
During the show there were appearances from two key characters from the series Breaking Bad, but I won’t ruin that for anyone that is planning to watch. But those characters also really give the viewer a connection to the old show and help you really get into this spinoff. The cliffhanger shows McGill face to face with a rather infamous character from the earlier part of Breaking Bad, and it does a great job of leaving you with wanting more, wanting to know more about how this encounter leads to the relationship of the pair and how it played into the plot of Breaking Bad.
After watching the pilot episode, I would give it a 9/10. It does a great job of satisfying Breaking Bad fans while maintaining its own plot and independence from the former.
