By Lindsay Martin–Interviews for upcoming May graduates are fast approaching. Along with the appropriate attire, and well-thought out answers, make-up might also be a must for women. According to a recent study, professional make-up affects a person’s view about a woman’s amiability, trustworthiness, and ability.
The study was paid for by Procter and Gamble, which sells CoverGirl and Dolce & Gabbana make-up. It had 25 female subjects who were photographed without make-up, and then given natural, professional, and glamorous looks. 149 adults, both men and women, judged the pictures and shared their impressions. The results confirmed that make-up positively affected facial attractiveness, as well as ratings of competence.
The study is not surprising considering appearance is an important factor in society today. Not only does make-up transform other people’s perceptions, but also how women feel about themselves. When applied correctly and moderately, make-up might be a necessary factor in attaining the next job opportunity in your life.
Although wearing make-up has virtually nothing to do with a person’s professional work ethic, it could send the impression that might positively influence the outcome of the interview.
Alex Watters, adjunct professor at Morningside College, said, “Women should not be judged based on their appearance, unless the job requires them to publically represent the company, where customers and patrons will judge them based on their appearance.”
Nancy Seeman, a senior at Morningside College, said, “I plan on wearing natural looking make-up for my interviews because first impressions can make or break an interview. It also makes me look more put together and professional.”
