Education practicums provide on-site learning

imagesBy Nancy Seeman–Morningside’s Education program comes highly recommended by students currently enrolled at Morningside as education majors.

Sophomore Katie Weis said, “Morningside has an awesome program especially with the practicum program.”

The education major allows students to gain real life experience by doing five hours of practicum in a classroom per credit hour depending on the class. This amount varies with the class and the subject in question.

During a practicum, Morningside students observe teachers in their environment and how the teachers run their classroom. From how the classroom is set up to how to handle students with certain abilities, students learn the dos and don’ts of teaching in a classroom.

“My ED 300 practicum was awesome. The teacher was so organized and her students respected her. It gave me a great view of what I want my classroom to look like some day,” said Weis.

The job shadowing of doing a practicum gives students the chance to really picture themselves having this as a career before getting to deep into the program at Morningside.

“My practicum reassured me that I am in the right field and gets me excited about my future in the education world,” says Weis.
