By Lauren Sorenson — CrossFit is a new workout trend that has gotten so big it has gained recognition from one of the biggest athletic stores in the business, Reebok. Reebok has created apparel specifically for CrossFit and has created a televised, national competition called CrossFit Games.
But what is CrossFit?
Jerry Dubois, the owner of CrossFit Sioux City, explains that “CrossFit is a core strength conditioning program based on 10 elements of fitness: cardiovascular, speed, agility, balance, coordination, power, agility, flexibility, stamina, and strength.”
CrossFit workouts go beyond what you would find at a regular gym. Dubois says, “Here we practice olympic lifting, calistentics, plyometrics, kettlebell training and gymnastics. We do all of these 5 to 6 days a week at high intensity, changing the routines up daily.”
This isn’t the only reason that CrossFit differs from other gyms, according to Taylor Hughsman, a member of CrossFit Sioux City. She says, “I like CrossFit because it’s not as overwhelming as other gyms. I know everyone there by name and we push each other to do the best we can. Plus, Jerry is a great coach. He walks everyone through the workout and works one-on-one with us to make sure we’re using proper techniques.”
CrossFit Sioux City doesn’t even look like the average gym. Dubois says, “our gym does not have mirrors, it is not a social club, we don’t believe in isolation machines.” The walls are white, besides Dubois’ CrossFit logo and a painiting of “Pukie the Clown.”
Cubbys that state each member’s name are located at the entrance, along with a couch for children or spectators. A black, foamy mat covers most of the large workout room. At first glance, there doesn’t appear to be much in the room besides the gymnastic bars, one rower, and one bench press machine. The center of the room is completely open. After a closer look you can see gymnastic rings dangling from the ceiling, while Olympic bars, weights, and wood boxes line the outside of the room.
Dubois believes that members of CrossFit Sioux City enjoy CrossFit because they love pushing themselves to the fullest, they love the routines, and they love the challenges. Not to mention many have reported extreme weight lose, increase in flexibility and strength, and a dramatic improvement in their overall well-being.
