By Gabe Schreck – With roughly three-quarters of the season complete, the Morningside men’s and women’s basketball teams are beginning to establish their direction heading into postseason play. The men currently sit at 15–5 overall and 12–1 in GPAC play, while the women hold an 11–10 overall record and are 6–9 in conference action.
Much of the men’s success has been driven by consistency on both ends of the floor. Sitting near the top of the GPAC standings, the Mustangs have positioned themselves as a legitimate contender heading into the final stretch of the season. Leading the way has been Senior forward Daniel Brocaille, who has emerged as a reliable scoring option and go-to presence in key moments, with a team-high 333 points on the season. Alongside him, Sophomore guard Alex Wilcoxson has provided steady production on the ball control side, helping Morningside control tempo and close out tight conference games, with a total of 88 rebounds and a team-high 111 assists on the season. If the Mustangs can maintain their current form, they appear well-positioned for a deep GPAC tournament run, with the potential to compete for an NAIA tournament berth.
While the women’s team has faced a more challenging road in conference play, the Mustangs remain firmly in the post-season conversation as the season winds down. Senior center Lily Vollersten has been a dominant offensive threat, accumulating a staggering 408 points on the season with a 45.8 field goal percentage, while also controlling the boards with 197 rebounds. Junior guard Jaeden Webb has also greatly contributed on the ball control side with a team-high 70 assists. Their performances have kept Morningside competitive against some of the GPAC’s toughest opponents. With several games remaining, the women have an opportunity to climb the standings and build momentum heading into the conference tournament, where a strong run could quickly change their postseason outlook.
As the regular season enters its final weeks, both Morningside squads share the same objective of playing their best. Whether it’s the men defending their place atop the GPAC or the women pushing for a late-season surge, the Mustangs have given themselves a chance to turn a strong season into an incredible postseason run.
