Men Score 100 points in Warriors Win

by Alexis Spier–The Mustang men moved to 5-1 in the GPAC with a 100-88 win over visiting Midland.

The Mustangs jumped ahead 14-2 in the first five minutes of play. They stayed out of reach of the Warriors for the entire first half. Midland made some runs but were never within less than six points of Morningside’s score in the initial 20 minutes of play. The score was 46-35 at half.

Midland pulled within four points in the second half, but with about 4 minutes left in the game, Morningside pulled away, hitting three digits before the final buzzer.

Four Mustangs scored in double digits to help secure the win. Joey Skoff led with 24 points, Ely Doble was next with 23 points, Jack Dotzler was knocking on the door with 22 points, and Brendan Buckley added 10 points.

Buckley led the team with 8 rebounds and was 4-7 from the field with two of those being from behind the arc. Dotzler and Skoff were both 9-11 from the field with Dotzler shooting 4-5 from the three-point-line and contributing 6 assists. Doble was 6-10 from the field and 11-15 from the line. He also tallied 6 rebounds. Justin Sitti came off the bench and led the team with 7 assists and added 8 points and 4 rebounds.

The Mustangs played an excellent offensive game, shooting 47.8% from beyond the arc and 58.3% from the field. The Warriors shot 25% from behind the arc and 50.8% from the field.

Derik Merwick led the Warriors offensively with 40 points. He was 12-20 from the field, 2-5 from three, and 14-18 from the line. Jake Orr and Jeffrey Rozelle III led the team in rebounding; both grabbed 5. Orr also contributed 15 points and 3 steals to the game.

The Mustangs next conference game isn’t until January 6th when they travel to Hastings College. Their next match is Saturday, Dec. 18th, when they will host Bellevue at 8 p.m.
