Skoff, Doble join the 1,000-point club

by Chaise Pfanstiel–The Morningside Mustang men’s basketball team had two seniors join the 1000-point club this past week in their game versus Dordt.

Joey Skoff and Ely Doble

The first Mustang to join the club was senior Joey Skoff, Omaha native. Skoff is a starting guard, averaging 20.5 points per game. After six games of the 2023-24 season, Joey is shooting 51.1% from the field, 28.6% from the three-point line, and 79.3% from the free throw line. Own his five years on the men’s basketball team, he has played in a total of 87 games and counting.

“I wouldn’t be near 1,000 points without all my teammates and coaches. It was never a goal I really thought about. My goal has always been to do whatever I can to help the team win. Any accolades and honors that come with that are just bonuses,” Skoff said. “My goals for the rest of the season are all team oriented. I want to keep winning games and growing together as a team. This will help us play our best basketball in March, when it really matters.”

Joining right alongside Skoff is senior Ely Doble, from Gretna Nebraska. Ely is a true senior who has also been contributing since his freshman year. At six-foot-six, Doble plays center for the Mustangs. In the six games played so far this season, Doble is averaging 20.5 points per game, with a field goal percentage of 63.3, three-point average of 33.3%, and 5.2 rebounds per game.

“I felt excited about reaching the milestone, but I was more excited about winning the game and beating Dordt. Honestly, I didn’t put much thought into reaching this goal because I came in with the mindset of doing whatever it takes to help the team win. I didn’t know what my role on the team these past years was going to be. All I knew was that I was going to work hard and put the time in. I didn’t really think about it until things started to come out about it,” Doble said.

The 1000-point members and the rest of the Mustangs will host Briar Cliff Wednesday, November 29, at 7:45P.M.
