First Family Fest turnout ‘awesome’

by Chaise Pfanstiel–Morningside University had a multitude of events happening on campus this past Saturday, Oct. 21, between a football game, two volleyball games, a swim meet, and choir and band concerts.

To add more to that, the Student Government planned a new event called Morningside Family Fest, with the goal being to find a weekend where there were going to be a lot of campus activities happening.

“Some of the activities included a pancake breakfast which was put on by Grill Masters and involved some faculty members who were able to meet students’ families,” said Student Government member Olivia Boudreau. “Followed by this was a tailgate before the football game where pizza from Jerry’s was served. A scavenger hunt was organized which gave students an opportunity to show their families around campus as well as win a bookstore gift card. Finally, Grill Masters grilled some burgers outside of Rosen Van Dorn before the second volleyball game. On Sunday there was a choir concert as well as a band performance.”

Overall, this event was designed for current students of Morningside and their families. There were around 400 families signed up for the activities held.

Chandler Todd and Student Government President Caleb Lubbers organized the event.

“Organizing the Family Fest was a ton of fun,” Todd said. “Since this university has not seen one of these in decades, I had to completely guess on what people were going to want, and what we should do to make it fun! I thought the turnout was awesome, making this one of the best events of the year. There are a few things I hope to get changed for next year, so I am going to have the new people of student government and other leaders take over and we are going to hammer out all the small kinks that happened.”

Lubbers said, “The Mustang Family Fest was a chance for students to share their university experience with their family members, creating lasting memories together. It was a chance for them to see what makes Morningside University a special place to be and for them to showcase their academic and extracurricular achievements.”
