Morningside withstood a third quarter comeback attempt by Arizona Christian to advance in the NAIA football playoffs 35-18.
Hanging on to a 21-18 lead, the Mustang defense clamped down and blanked the firestorm in the fourth quarter. Running back Ryan Cole, the offensive player of the game, had 208 yards on 44 carries in addition to two first-half touchdowns.
The Mustangs next host No. 12 Kaiser University (Fla) in the quarterfinals, Nov. 26, at noon. The Seahawks scored the one upset of the first round, upending No. 4 Bethel 27-17.
