Musketeers prepare for playoffs

by Bryce Griffin–The Sioux City Musketeers wrapped up another great weekend going 2-0 against the United States Hockey League last place team, the Des Moines Buccaneers. The Buccaneers only won 18 games this year, but adding to the Musketeers win total brought their total to 39 wins on the 2021–2022 season.

The Musketeers started the weekend with a 4-0 shutout victory by goalie Alex Tracy on Friday at the Tyson Event Center. The Musketeers leading goal scorer Ben Steeves, Dylan Gratton, Ben Doran, and Bennet Schimek all scored.

The Musketeers then traveled to Des Moines and Buccaneer Arena for the final regular season matchup of the season between the two teams. The Musketeers won 3-1 with goals scored by Steeves and Schimek, along with Owen McLaughlin, the Musketeers leading points scorer. Musketeers backup goalie Axel Mangbo, who is coming off a lower body injury, also got some playing time for the first time since February when he was injured in Fargo, North Dakota.

The Musketeers will take on the Omaha Lancers this weekend, once in Ralston, Nebraska on Friday before heading home for their final game of the regular season, also against the Lancers, before heading into the playoffs.

With the weekend wins the Musketeers secured a first round Clark Cup Playoffs bye. The Musketeers will play their first playoff games in the last weekend of April against an opponent to be announced. As of right now that opponent could be one of three teams: The Waterloo Black Hawks, the Lincoln Stars or, the Fargo Force.

As the playoff picture comes into focus in the last weekend of the USHL regular season the Musketeers are sitting in a good spot and will get some rest before the 2nd round.
