by Chloe Krommendyk–After being with the Mustangs for many years, head golf coach Todd Sapp retired after the 2021 Spring Golf season. Though it was quite the loss for both the Morningside men’s and women’s golf teams, the new coach has not disappointed so far.
Taking Sapp’s place is one of his good friends, coach Nick Wanderscheid. Because of this friendship, Wanderscheid had already had a relationship with the Mustangs before becoming coach, as he had worked with several players over time. Wanderscheid said, “I could not be more excited to follow in Coach Sapp’s footprints and lead these two great programs”.
Wanderscheid is a Sioux City native, growing up only three blocks from the Morningside campus. He graduated from Sioux City East in 1997, married his wife, Jill, in 2007 and they now live in Whispering Creek, the home golf course to the Mustangs.
Wandersheid is no stranger to the game of golf. He has been in the golf business for his entire working career. Some positions he has had: PGA Professional at Green Valley Golf Club and PGA Teaching Professional at Dakota Dunes Country Club.
While Wandersheid has never been a college coach, he has taught and coached golf to many young adults throughout his 20-plus year career as a PGA Professional. He is beyond qualified as he has won over 40 professional tournaments in his golf career. He has also competed in seven PGA Professional National Championships and will be competing in number eight this Spring in Austin, Texas.
Wanderscheid says he was nervous about beginning this new role. He said, “I was not worried about the golf side of the job because I have been in this business both playing and teaching for over 20 years”. He was more overwhelmed on the University side of things. He had to learn about recruiting, admissions, financial aid, etc.
Some influential people that helped with this process were Terri Curry and Jim Sykes, as well as everyone in admissions. Regarding this, he said “The sense of community amongst the staff here at Morningside is something that I have never experienced before. We are all here for the same goal, to make Morningside University the best possible experience it can be for the students, staff, faculty, and alumni and the teamwork that everyone here exhibits every day is a testament to that”.
