2/29 – Sounds of Morningside

This is a loud sound, the dreaded fire alarm. It’s a students worst nightmare to get woken up by this sound at 4AM on a cold night in January, or any night or day really.
The famous campus squirrel. Whenever you walk, you’ll hear them rattle around either in the trees or around on the ground.
The American flag blowing in the wind by Lewis Hall. The sound of wind is a critical part of the Morningside experience.

#10 – Editorial

This picture means a lot to me. AAC Champions. The emotions I felt in this moment was indescribable as I achieved something I had worked incredibly hard for. Leaving all my friends and girlfriend behind at Morningside after having spent two years there, to transfer to Florida International University, an enormous D1 school in Miami, FL. No one believed I could and I was being called everything from ‘lucky’ to ‘not good enough’ and ‘stupid’. Not only being a part of a top 10 D1 program, but playing and contributing to winning the most prestigious soccer conference in the country, was everything that I knew I was capable of. This was a moment that proved a lot of people wrong, but most importantly I proved myself right.

#17 – Food

This picture is from Texas Roadhouse here in Sioux City, one of my favorite restaurants here in town. As you most likely know, it is hard to photograph food to make it look appetizing and edible. Because of that, I wanted to experiment with it, in terms of getting people (myself) to have a role in the picture. Here you can feel the anticipation of the person to eat the food based on the pose and the angle of the picture. In the end, the anticipation was met with a wonderfully tasting meal, better than it looked.

#12 – Night

As someone who isn’t from here, the one thing that has stood out to me since my arrival is the sunsets. My favorite part of the night here in Sioux City, is when the sun is setting, transitioning from day to night. I think most people would agree with me, that sunsets does not get much more beautiful than the ones here in the Siouxland area, and this picture is therefore my take on ‘Siouxland by Night’.

#18 – Fashion

Everything in this picture is on purpose. The location, the colors, the pose, everything. The outfit aesthetic is ‘casual streetwear’, and it therefore fits in a kinda ‘dirty’ setting in front of the vending machines. The picture being black/white highlights the clothes well; The texture of the grey hoodie, the quality and fit of the black pants, and the texture of the grey and white sneakers. The pose also highlights the best of each item; shows the back-print on the hoodie, the fit of the pants, and the size and texture on the sneakers. The outfit: Fear of God Essentials hoodie, Lululemon pants, Puma sneakers. All high quality and expensive pieces of clothing, put together for a simple and clean look.

#2 – Emotion

This is a picture of my girlfriend, Agnes Garder. The emotion in this picture is hard to find a specific word for, but I would say that it is a hybrid of excitement and happiness. The moment in which the picture is captured is when I took her out for dinner on Valentine’s Day at Kahill’s Chophouse, arguably the finest restaurant in Sioux City. All the excitement and happiness caught in this picture was a mixture of me getting her flowers, gifts, and lastly letting her dress up (which she also loves) to take her out to her favorite restaurant. I was trying to get a picture of her in her dress while waiting for our table, but her happy emotions came out and I think that I prefer this picture over whatever I would’ve captured.

#11 – Interior

This picture is taken inside of the Eppley Auditorium building at Morningside University. This is from the main entrance/lobby to the auditorium, which if you haven’t been, is a long corridor with big glass windows which can be seen in the picture. The corner from where this picture is taken, is my favorite ‘cozy’ place at the university. The furniture being three different colors seems off, but at the same time just right, it fits the aesthetic of the place perfectly, same with the ball-lamps. It is a really clean and simple layout, which is what makes it elegant.

1. How have your thoughts about YOUR photography changed? (Note: I’m assuming there has been change.) Consider how and when you take photos. The subject(s) of those photos. And the quality of the photos. What is new to you and where do you want to improve.

  •  My thoughts about my own photography have changed. I have become more conscious about things such as lines, depth of field, color and so on., before, I would kinda just take a picture and then deal with it instead of trying my best to capture it better in the moment. I still want to improve taking good quality photos, but I am still quite new to it so I am optimistic.

2. Have the readings and discussions changed your thoughts about photography? About photojournalism. Provide a couple of examples if possible.

  • The reading about spot news changed my thoughts on photography big time, it made me gain a lot more respect for the people in the field. The preparation and work it takes for just ‘one’ quick shot is admirable. Also, the section we had about portraits made think about them differently. I’ve always thought about portraits to just be a formal boring picture of a person, never that it could be set-up in a funny/cool way to display more of the personality of a person too.

#8 – College Life

For me, an integral part of ‘college life’ is meeting new people and making friends with people from all over. In this picture you can see my good friend and fellow Morningside student, Victor West, who is from Chicago. Like myself, Victor is far from home (not quite as far as me), and it is therefore something we had in common. On his shirt, you can see his favorite rapper, Kanye West, who also is a Chicago native and reminds Victor of home. Another thing we have in common which have made us close, is the love for sports. This picture is taken at the student basketball intramural tournament, in which we played together. Victor is 6’4 which this picture displays well, being taken from a low angle. For me, college is all about making friends, being part of the community, and enjoying everyday, this picture sums that up for me.
