Scavenger Hunt: Caterina Vanderploeg

When I entered Louis Hall Caterina was at the front desk. She asked me if I needed any help with my scavenger hunt. I was surprised to find out that she was working on an assignment for another journalism class. My first objective was to ask for a favorite motivational quote. Caterina said, “life is ten percent of what happens to you ninety percent of how you react.” I was also required to take a selfie with Caterina which is pictured above.

The polls are in: here’s who won-and lost- last weeks debate

Democratic presidential candidates Senator Elizabeth Warren and former Vice President Joe Biden speak during a break in the Democratic Presidential Debate at Texas Southern University’s Health and PE Center on September 12, 2019, in Houston, Texas.

With the third round of the presidential debates over, the ten democratic candidates battled on the stage. The spotlight is more intense than ever leading up to the democratic presidential nominee.

With the frontrunner former Vice President Joe Biden leading in five national polls, while four poles show Elizabeth Warren in second place, with Senator Bernie Sanders in third. As with any poll, there is a margin of error. However, it was California Senator Kamala Harris that received the worst news.

The latest polls show Senator Harris clearly falling behind the pack. Looking behind the top five candidates you have Andrew Yang, Beto O’Rourke, and Cory Booker all of which all have around three percent nationally since the debates.

With Iowa being a critical state on the campaign trail, the Ann Selzer’s Des Moines Register poll is well respected. The results of that poll will be released soon. Therefore a more clear path through Iowa will be set.

This article is important as it pertains to the 2020 presidential election. Something which affects all American citizens. The audience is much broader as opposed to my previous article about Brook Lopez which had a more narrow target audience. The audience for this article is nationwide as it concerns the United States.

Article 1 Final Draft

With Hurricane Dorian spiraling towards the coast, President Trump is defending a NOAA map that appeared to be modified with a black sharpie. The map showed a questionable projection of the storm hitting Alabama.

The President tweeted the following Monday: “The Fake News Media was fixated on the fact that I properly said, at the beginnings of Hurricane Dorian that in addition to Florida & other states, Alabama may also be grazed or hit.” Adding, “This nonsense has never happened to another President.”

After being mocked by major news outlets and social media, the President originally claimed that he was provided with outdated forecasts. While some of the earliest models for the Hurricanes path had the chance that Alabama could be affected by the storm. However, by the time Trump tweeted there were already more accurate forecasts that showed Alabama was no longer in danger said a top NOAA official.

According to Craig McLean NOAA’s acting chief scientist Trumps claims were “political” and a “danger to public health and safety.” By giving the public false information Trump is overselling the danger affecting people’s lives.  According to the Washington Post Mclean is “pursuing the potential violations of our NOAA Administrative Order on Scientific Integrity” McLean wrote. The Associated Press reported the head of the National Weather Service defended forecasters who challenged the Presidents claim that Dorian threatened Alabama. Trumps Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross allegedly threatened top employees at the NOAA after the agency contradicted the president in a tweet. NOAA administrator Neil Jacobs told the staff that they would be fired if they contradicted Trumps Alabama remarks. The National Weather Service almost immediately debunked the presidents claim, but he repeated the assertion that the map was not doctored twice more that day.

President Trumps tweets come as Hurricane Dorian advanced to the coast of the Carolinas, making landfall in North Carolina overnight as the Bahamas continued recovery efforts. At least 30 have been confirmed dead in the Bahamas so far, and at least four have been killed in the Southeastern coast.

I used sources from Politico, CBS News, Newsweek, and the Presidents Twitter account. The Politico article “Trump drags his Alabama hurricane claims into the 6thday.” This article by Caitlin Oprysko is certainly is written with a neutral perspective in mind. It uses several quotes from the President and other agencies. The article from CBS News “NOAA chief scientist reportedly investigation agency’s backing of Trump’s claims about hurricane.” It focuses on the exchange between the President and NOAA chief scientist Craig McLean. It contains great information about the potential ramifications of violating the NOAA Administrative Order on Scientific Integrity. The final article from Newsweek “Trump Commerce Chief Wilbur Ross Threatened NOAA to Agree with President’s Alabama Hurricane Tweet.” This article main focus is Trumps Secretary of Commerce threatening NOAA scientists to agree with Trumps Alabama Hurricane blunder.

Struggling Lopez needs to make a splash for Team USA

via https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/27584152/struggling-lopez-needs-make-splash-team-usa

Last season the Milwaukee Bucks new acquisition center Brook Lopez had the best season of his career. Shooting a career-high 37% from 3pt range and averaging 2 blocks a game. Lopez which was playing for the Bucks had the best record in the NBA at 60-22.

The Bucks never lost more than two games in a row were dominate during the regular season then loosing four games in a row in the eastern conference finals against the Toronto Raptors.

Lopez, which has had limited playing time for team USA during the FIBA tournament. Team USA which will be playing in the championship game against France which is no easy feat. The French national team has one of the best if not the best defensive player in the world. All NBA center Rudy Gobert.

Gobert, plays for the defensive minded Utah Jazz, has won defensive player of the year. For the last three years. Lopez, which has had limited playing time on a roster with plenty of holes already is looking to go home with the FIBA championship.

This is a great article. Brian Windhorst is an accredited NBA journalist that has been around the league for years. The article uses quotations from other players. My favorite is from Donovan Mitchell when talking about Gobert “He’s a hell of a player.”

Gun laws were loosened in Texas the day after the state’s second mass shooting in a month

Via https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2019/9/1/20843797/texas-shooting-gun-laws-loosened-odessa-el-paso-greg-abbott

This week I have decided to cover another Vox article. The author Anya Van Wagtendonk. The main point of this article is not just relating back to the recent shootings that happened in Odessa Texas, but talking about several new gun laws that were reccently passed. This article also includes a twitter post in the middle of the article which I find disorienting. Also, it includes various quotes from Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

I find it sadly ironic that Texas passed several gun laws recently that weakened gun control. According to the article there are nearly 1.4 million gun owners in the state. I feel that Vox is prehaps left leaning, it isn’t near as bad as Fox News or CNN.

Trump’s push to hold the G7 at Trump Doral, explained

Trump at the G7 summit in France via https://www.vox.com/2019/8/26/20833650/trump-g7-trump-doral-explained

The latest controversy surrounding President Trump is now about the location for the next G7 summit. Trump who attended this year’s summit in France suggested that next year’s G7 summit should be held at Trump Doral in Florida. Trump Doral, which was founded in 1962, is located in Miami. The topic first came up after a bilateral meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. This comes following weeks of controversy regarding the President attempts to reinvite Russin President Vladimir Putin.

Reflection:

Is isn’t surprising anymore to see President Trump in the Headlines in a negative light. The fact that he is promoting his business that he hasn’t seperated himself from in anyway is telling. Before the President took office he swore to turn over control of his business empire to his sons. Even if this has happened in writing it hasn’t happened in practice. His business would obviously benefit from hosting the G7 meeting.

Both with his church as well as other community groups.

Response: Report on Racism

I feel like people can interpret this article in many ways. It’s a bold claim to call someone a racist let alone the president of the United States. A word like that carries immense weight and can destroy a person’s professional career. It should not be used lightly. In this particular scenario I think it was used correctly. The things that were said in President Trumps tweet were shocking and uncalled-for. However, it is important to discuss these labels and if correct to use them because of the significance of the claims.
