News Comment #13: What China’s ‘Zero Covid’ Policy Has Looked Like

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/07/world/asia/china-zero-covid-pictures.html

China has been on a serious lockdown for a long time due to Covid-19. China has had a way more aggressive approach to the virus compared to the rest of the world. The last couple of months there has been a “zero covid” policy leading to several protest in November.

As a response to the current protest the government chose to roll back some of the strictest restrictions. As a consequences of these policies China’s social and economic aspects has become turmoil.

This article is a lot different from other articles because it contains a lot more pictures than writing. It is interesting to see how the article still tells a story or gives the reader an insight of what China looks like under lockdown. Personally, I think informational articles works out better with more text and less pictures, but I do think it is also good to have some diversity within how to publish articles.

Profile: Parents’ Divorce can be Impactful

When we pass people on the street or meet someone for the first time we have no idea who that person truly is or what they have been through. Morningside-student Jolina Stuebner has had a different childhood than some of her friends. Her parents got divorced when she was only six years old, which according to her close friends has had an impact in the way she is today.

When asking Jolina’s close friends of Morningside, Ellie Barber and Emma Dahlhoff, to describe Jolina there was no hesitation with the words caring and selfless. They both think that these qualities has had a smaller connection back to her parents’ divorce and is now a role in Jolina’s character today. Emma Dahlhoff says, “I think there are little aspects of her that you can see she values things a bit more for example quality time that might come from a deeper reason.”

After Jolina grew up and started having some perspective on the whole divorce she believes the divorce has had a subconsciously effect on her. She says, “I do not feel it in my everyday life, but it does shape some of my believes or attitude towards family and relationships.” Due to this whole experience Jolina believes that she has a more realistic view on how relationships can end up.

People who does not have divorced parents can often have a completely different perspective on relationships and cannot imagine what it must be like having divorced parents. This is the case for Ellie Barber. Her parents have been together for 23 years and are still going strong. She would feel devasted if she had to go through the experience of her parents divorcing. She says “I think divorce can be so hard on a person mentally, because family is such a personal private thing, so I can only imagine it being horrible.”

Accepting a divorce can be hard and it was for six year old Jolina. It is an emotional topic for her and despite the fact that she always dreamt of her parents getting back together, she has learned a lot from it and has accepted that it will always be a part of her childhood. Both friends think it is important to have learned about this aspect of Jolina’s life and it has only made them closer.

News Comment #12: Iran Shutting Down Morality Police, Official Says, After Months of Protests

At least 400 people have been killed in Iran since the protests began, including 50 minors, and the United Nations has said that some 14,000 people have been arrested.

The killing of, Mahsa Amini, a young woman in Iran led to the ongoing protest. She was arrested by the moral police because of the way she was dressed. Protesters have been chanting “woman, life, freedom,” tearing off their hijabs, burned them in street bonfires and cut their hair in symbolic acts of defiance.

The attorney general said that the authorities were reviewing the law requiring women to cover their bodies in long, loose clothing and their hair with a head scarf or hijab and would issue a decision within 15 days.

This article is well-written and even if you, as a reader, have not kept up with the ongoing protests in Iran you can still understand the article. It is definitely a benefit if the reader already know about the situation, but it is not necessary. The length of the article is good, not too long or too short. If gives the reader a good insight on the whole situation and what the progress of it is.

The story:

The day of Thanksgiving the golden retriever, Pippa, ingested unbaked yeast dough which ended up bringing her to the veteran hospital. Dogs and cats can’t digest unbaked dough properly and it can even be deadly to them.

Audience:

The audience for this story would mostly be dog owners, so they are informed about what can be poisonous towards their animals.

Benefit:

The benefit of this news article is to be informed about what effect unbaked dough can have on dogs and how to make sure to be aware of what your dog eats.

Company:

Personally, I do not find the article that important, so I’m nor sure how many benefits there could be for the company by pressing the story.

Spider Bite helped Maturity

Last year Cassie McDermott went through an elbow surgery teaching her a lot about being mature.

McDermott got a bad infection in her elbow from a spider bite in the end of August only a month after moving into college. This is the first time she has moved away from home and her parents were all the way back in Colorado. She went to the hospital, and her parents showed up after the emergency had happened. Thereby, McDermott learned how to handle this type of situation by herself. The process of the infection did not stop there. Her arm was “open” the whole semester, where she had to keep the cast dry, inject her own medicine through an IV, go to weekly doctors visits etc.

This situation showed a lot of maturity and she managed not take time of school, support her team at every practice and game, and just continue her life as normal.

McDermott says, “I’m very resilient and know how to stay composed” when talking about what she got from this experience. Furthermore, she learned to stand up for herself and knows not to freak out in these types of situations now. Overall, it taught her to grow up and how to mature on your own.

News Comment #11: Student Charged in University of Virginia Shooting Appears in Court

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/16/us/uva-shooting-football.html

Last week three college football players were killed. The University of Virginia senior, Christopher Darnell Jones Jr, charged with shooting five fellow students, three of whom were killed, appeared by video in a brief court hearing on Wednesday morning, where he was ordered held without bail.

Jones, who turns 23 on Thursday, has been charged with three counts of second-degree murder, two counts of malicious wounding and five counts of using a handgun in the commission of a felony.

Jones was a walk-on player on the team in 2018 and did not play in any games. The three players killed Sunday night were Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr. and D’Sean Perry.

After the shooting the school decided to cancel their football game against Coastal Carolina, which was supposed to be the last home game of the season.

This article is very well written. It is objective and neutral. It is always impressive when people can stay neutral when writing these types of articles. The length of it was good and it seemed to be that all the information the public know so far was included.

Assignment #3

Script:

Good afternoon, I’m Lucia and this is your daily news.

Story #1:

Donald Trump continues to tease the public about the next election.

November 3rd Donald Trump said that he would quote “very very very probably do it again” when talking about running for Presidency 2024.

Trump flew out to Sioux Gateway Airport Thursday night with under a week left for the midterm election. Here he was met with people welcoming him by chanting his name. For more than 70 minutes the former President spoke on topics, from farming, to election fraud, to the so-called “wall” and a lot more.

Trump said, “I ran twice. I won twice,” claiming that he won the last election going against all prove of fraud. Continuedly, he claims that the election was stolen and promoted same-day voting by paper ballots to combat alleged voter fraud. He wrapped up the speech by connecting the midterm election results to larger victories in 2024.

Sioux City is very close to Morningside University meaning several students showed up to hear his speech. One of the Morningside students who went was Paula Geiser and she describes the speech as “The speech served mostly to blame other parties and neglected to focus on political goals. The whole speech and event reminded me more of a commercial or reality show by what he was talking about”

Iowa Republicans hope Trump’s visit will fire up the party’s base and drive turnout in critical midterm elections.

Story #2:

Next up we’re moving across the Atlantic Sea, where the Danish national soccer team’s warm-up jersey has been banned. FIFA banned Denmark’s shirts that has written across the stomach “Human Rights for All.”

FIFA regulations for the tournament state that it is quote “prohibited to display political, religious or personal messages as well as slogans of any kind in any language”

Despite this rule the Danish Football Association (DBU) chose to have this shirt made due to all the criticism towards Qatar’s human rights positioning right now. The shirt is a silent peace protest. The banning is not going to stop the Danes though. The Danish captain, Simon Kjær, is set (alongside other countries) to wear the OneLove armband to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ discrimination in Qatar.

All of this is especially important to the soccer players of Morningside University including the Dane, Lea Okkels, who says “I think that Denmark should be allowed to wear these practice shirts. Denmark is just trying to tell a simple message about universal human rights, and they are using their platform for better.”

The world is shocked over FIFA’s choice of banning these jerseys.

Story #3:

Speaking of shocking, a new booster shot for covid to target the latest version of the Omicron variant is now available.

This new shot is more advanced. It targets two versions; the original strain, and the Omicron subvariants.

It might not be as easy getting the vaccine as it should be since many mass-vaccination clinics has closed. Luckily, it is available at pharmacies and community health centers.

Morningside University has given out free booster shots for its students. Student, Ellie Barber, says, “I think it is a very important thing to offer it to everyone and remind the younger generation to take the booster.”

It is recommended by doctors that you should wait 4-6 months after last shot or infection.

My name is Lucia and that was all of the daily news.

News Comment #10: Biden’s Message on Climate Might Not Be the One the World Wants

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/10/climate/biden-cop27-climate-reparations.html

America is currently receiving a lot of criticism about their lack of involvement in fighting climate change. In 2020 the US gave just 5 percent of what it should have contributed.

On Friday at the COP27, the president is expected to hail the new U.S. climate law. However, other countries want to talk money and how America needs to do better. France’s President, Macron, says “Europeans are paying,” he said. “We are the only ones paying.”

A lot of the reasoning behind these results are due to the politics. If Republicans are in charge come January, there will be less money, to help foreign nations cope with climate change, and it will slow down Biden’s agenda for climate. Several countries express they understand that it is hard for America, because of their politics. African leaders says “We’ve always understood the Congress is difficult. But do the American people not understand what’s happening to the planet?’”

USA is one of the leading countries when it comes to pollution, which is also why it is receiving more criticism. “They tend to promise a lot, pledge a lot, but deliver very little.” said Richard Sherman, the lead negotiator for an African bloc of nations.

This article gives a lot of information on how the world’s leaders views America’s contributions to the fight against climate change. It is an easy read, but very long. Personally, I feel a lot of people will lose interest in the article not even halfway-through. When strictly looking at the content of the article it is good and informational in my opinion, but it needs to be shorter to reach more readers.

News Comment #9 – Elon Musk Begins Layoffs at Twitter

m/2022/11/03/technology/twitter-layoffs-elon-musk.html

Elon Musk bought twitter October 27th for $44 billion. This means about half of Twitter’s workers are set to lose their jobs, according to internal messages.

Twitter is a 7,500-person work force and Musk is planning on cutting a lot to get the social media on a healthy path. He has already fired its chief executive and other top managers. This whole plan is going to affect a lot of individuals, but Musk agreed to keep employee compensation and benefits the same for one year. Normally, Twitter workers are paid at least two months’ salary and the cash value of equity they were scheduled to receive within three months of a layoff date.

All of the layoff notification will come Friday and a lot of people already seems to be upset with the situation by posting different tweets on Twitter.

This article was well-written and easy to understand. It was a bit long though and there were some details that could have been left out, such as the fact that other companies also fired people recently. Also, I personally think it would work better if it was mentioned earlier on that Musk bought twitter instead of having three other paragraphs before. Again, I think it is a good article with a lot of information.
