Thomas Jeffery, also known as TJ, is a business major who plays basketball for the Morningside Mustangs. Being a big-time recruit for football you would think he would have chosen that as his calling for college. However, his love was for basketball, and wanted to take one of the few scholarship offers.

TJ is from Algona, Iowa, and went to Bishop Garrigan where he threw shot put, played basketball and football.

He has one brother who is older than him that went to Iowa, who continues to give him good advice throughout his college years.

His mom and dad are both big influences in the community of Algona due to his dad being a gym teacher at the high school and his mom being the coach of the Bishop Garrigan girls’ volleyball team. TJ gets all of his athletic ability from his mom who was a D1 women’s volleyball player at Drake.

Tj said he picked Morningside based on the family-like atmosphere that provided him with an at-home feeling.

He is not sure what he wants to do when he is older but would love to do something that includes sports.

Although TJ is not very talkative for people he doesn’t know, once you have the pleasure of knowing him, he is a non-stop talker. Zach Martinek said, “Sometimes that man can’t be quiet, which is amazing to see cause some people can barely get a peep out of him.”

TJ is a person who needs time to get to know you and will do anything when he puts a constant trust in your life.

He is also a huge lover other than a fighter. TJ would rather make amends with you and show that he cares, rather than hold a grudge and never want to get on to speaking terms.

TJ’s girlfriend, Mckenna Sims said, “TJ is such a sweetheart and will do anything for me to feel good about myself and make sure that I am taken care of. I love him so much and his heart deserves the world.”

Lastly, Tj had the ability to make an impact on youth sports, where he is coaching 6th-grade boy basketball. He can make an impact on the youth and show them the skills he has learned from his own experiences where he has the ability to play college basketball.

James Maher said, “Tj does such a good job implementing what he has learned and providing good examples for our kids. I am excited to see where this season leads us to and how the kids will show improvement.”

Pompeo Visits Bank Settlement

Secretary of state Mike Pompeo is providing information on the boycott-Israel movement should be treated as anti-Semitic. He feels the imports from Jewish settlements should be labeled as products of Israel. Trump and his administration unveiled new guidelines to ensure the goods are rightfully exported. They do not want to have any interaction with those who recognize themselves as B.D.S. and America does not support that group.

I feel that this is making a stand for those who put their work in and make a case for why their products should be labeled the way it is. I also feel this is helping with our allies and letting them know we have their backs. They really grabbed my attention because it presented the facts that our secretary of state was overseas which is always interesting considering Trump doesn’t care what he says about them.

Homer, the polar bear, passed away

Homer was found dead in his own exhibit this morning. After finding Homer dead the other two polar bears Yukon and Mckenzie were relocated and are now being looking at by the veterinary staff.

Sara N. Getty, the zookeeper, said that Homer was very playful and curious. It will be a huge hit at the Midland Zoo and will be deeply missed. Dr. Shanda Lear, a senior staff veterinarian, explained that “[t]he zoo will perform a necropsy to try to determine the cause of death”. However, we may not get those results for weeks after the original tests.

Polar bears have been functioning at the zoo since 1985. The exhibit gives polar bears an interactive life with nature. There are ambassadors for their wild relatives, educating zoo visitors about these threatened animals.

Chris P. Bacon who is the zoo director said, “We will do everything in our power to determine how this bear died. Animal welfare and the preservation of species are our primary goals here at the zoo.”

Bacon also confirmed that there were two other deaths at the zoo this month, but that these deaths are unrelated. A 10-year-old female bobcat named Regina died of renal failure and a 6-year-old giraffe named Kenya died after breaking her neck when her horns for caught in her stall.

Notorious BIG

Who is Biggie Smalls?

Biggie Smalls real name Christopher George Latore Wallace was born May 21, 1972. His hometown was Brooklyn, New York. Both of his parents came from the Caribbean island of Jamaica. His mom was a preschool teacher and his dad was a welder and local politician. His mom worked two jobs to send Christopher to a private school but wasn’t motivated and transferred to Westinghouse Career and Technical Education. However, he finally dropped out of school at the age of 17. After dropping out Christopher Wallace started selling cocaine on the block and street battling against hometown rappers. Then, he got locked up and began taking writing raps seriously and recorded a bunch of demos. His tape was soon found by source magazine and got the attention of Sean Combs who was a producer who worked for uptown records. After creating his records he started to blow up living his best life and creating a beef between him and west coast rappers.

Sadly, Biggie did not live long enough to see the peace he wished for. He himself was murdered in the early hours of March 9, 1997. It happened shortly after he left a Vibe magazine party at the Peterson Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. As Biggie’s SUV — in which he was riding with a bodyguard and Lil’ Cease — waited at a red light, a vehicle pulled up alongside it, and a gunman opened fire. His bodyguard rushed Biggie to the hospital, but it was already too late. The death of Biggie and Tupac stopped the East coast/ West Coast rap fued.

Biggie is one of my favorite rappers and I have always like his music due to my dad turning me on to him.

Dreaming is an everyday thing and will continually be a part of your life.

Dreams are a part of everyone’s life no matter how old you are. Everyone has once had a dream and it can be on the spectrum of an island of desserts or a scary monster following you. As Psychology Today said, “

* A component and form of memory processing, aiding in the consolidation of learning and short-term memory to long-term memory storage.

* An extension of waking consciousness, reflecting the experiences of waking life.”

This is showing that your mind is constantly working and creates different mental pictures in your life where you can see experiences that you do/don’t want to forget. Many of my family members have been saying since COVID started their dreams have been very scary. Jason Fierst had to say, “My dreams have been really stressing me out, lately. I feel it has been bad due to my being stressed about getting COVID and doing all the precautions to stay healthy and away from quarantine.”

Basketball has been something in the main news stream with the impacts of COVID. Now we move on to our Sioux City’s finest Morningside Mustangs.

In recent news on Morningside basketball. The NAIA has issued a protocol stating that they will not charge fall and winter student-athletes a year of competition.

The decision was made off of the survey throughout the conferences. Remarkably out of 19 conferences 12 of them agreed with this protocol. COVID continues to have a big impact on the NAIA but doing this is giving the athletes a chance to persevere through a season with a lot of ups and downs.

Morningside Basketball player, TJ Schnurr had this to say, “I feel this is great news to those who could lose out on games this year. It needed to be fixed and the committee answered their prayers.” TJ is among many players celebrating this recent news so is many seniors who were scared their season had the possibility of being taken away due to COVID.

Now for national news, the election has taken everyone in the nation by storm.

The 2020 election has been quite a wild one due to previous events. The winner who has not been picked due to the counting still going on has people on the edge of their seats. At the moment Joe Biden is the leader with 253 electoral college votes, but President Donald Trump has a chance to make a run for it if Arizona makes a flip in candidates.

Zach Martinek who is a Morningside Sophomore and a political expert had this to say, “looking at the election right now, I think there is a lot of fraud is going on. There has been a lot of odd things going on.  We will see what happens in the courts. I just want a fair election with the winner being who the American people truly want whether it is Biden or Trump” This debate of the presidential elections definitely going to be one to remember.

Baby Nancy is the first doll toll inaugurated into the national toy hall of fame. Baby Nancy is the first black baby doll to have an afro and other authentic features. This doll was created after the Watt riots in California. It was started by a non-profit black community self-help organization. Still to this day, it is considered a national landmark doll and continually helps with the breakthrough of cultural differences.

I feel this is huge for society at this point. It is showing that we are caring for all of those who don’t matter the skin color. I also didn’t know they had a national hall of fame and it presented a new avenue to read about and see what other things are already inducted. I also like how it made the front news page because the headline was very eye-opening and made me want to read something other than the campaign news.
