Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel, stars of the 90s show “Boy Meets World”, will once again be playing the roles of Cory and Topanga in the new sequel show “Girl Meets World”.  The show will focus on their 13 year old daughter, Riley, who has not been casted yet.  Cory will play the role of Riley’s seventh grade teacher in the show.  It is rumored that there will be some old characters and some new ones, but that people should keep in mind that this is a completely new show.

This is newsworthy because “Boy Meets World” was a very popular show in the 90s.  I think this is a smart movie for the Disney Channel because this show is going to target a big market.  Being on the Disney Channel, even if younger kids have never heard of “Boy Meets World”, they will be intrigued by a new show to watch.  It will also target people my age who grew up in the 90s watching “Boy Meets World” and will be interested to see the old characters in a new show.

Wal-Mart has decided to open there doors at 8pm Thanksgiving night to begin there Black Friday sales.  As a result many workers across the country have become upset and are planning to go on strike.  1000 protests at different stores are expected to occur on Black Friday.  Workers have also said they are upset about low pay and not getting enough hours.  Even though this protest is being considered fairly small it may still cause problems, the biggest being discouraging shoppers from shopping at Wal-Mart.

From my experiencing working Black Friday is very crazy and entertaining.  Where I work we open at 5 in the morning.  I would be upset too if I had to go in to work at 8pm on Thanksgiving.  That takes away from time that is suppose to be spend with family.  This article was interesting because it talks about how all these people are planning to go on strike but at the end their biggest concern is the effect it will have on the shoppers.  They need to take their workers’ thoughts into consideration otherwise no one will want to work there anymore and they will have an even bigger problem on their hands.

This short story talks about how Hostess is being forced to shut down after a strike by their employees.  All products that they make are available while supplies last.  This includes twinkies.  There has been a sharp increase in the purchase of all Hostess products and that is expected to keep increasing as more people find out about the situation.  This is a newsworthy story because it certainly affects a lot of people.  The consumers of the product need to be aware and know why the product is no longer being made.  It will also cause a lot of people to be out of a job.  The title of this story caught my eye and actually made me laugh.  I just thought it was funny because it reminded me of the movie Zombieland and how one of the actors is on a hunt through the whole movie to find the last twinkies on earth.  Now it is actually happening.

Story 3 FINAL

Thanksgiving break is turning into a very busy week here on campus.  Whether it’s watching football, spending time with family, or Black Friday shopping, everyone’s traditions are different. Taylor Mahin is planning to go home for the holiday. (Quote from Taylor)  There is no right or wrong way to celebrate the holidays; every family has their own style.

I know my family will be glued to the TV the day after Thanksgiving as Nebraska takes on Iowa in the Heroes game. Nebraska’s current record is 8-2 and Iowa is sitting at 4-6.  Nancy Seeman is planning to make an appearance in Iowa City next Friday. (Quote from Nancy)  The game is scheduled for Friday, November 23, at 11am.

The Morningside football team continues to roll through their schedule with ease.  Recently named GPAC Champions and still undefeated, they are set to play Montana Tech on Saturday in the first round of playoffs.  One Mustang supporter, Alex Howrey, has made it her goal to make it to every game she can. (Quote from Alex).  If Morningside beats Montana Tech there next game will also be Thanksgiving weekend.  Good luck to the Mustangs with the rest of their season.

New research is showing a connection between memory loss and medication for insomnia and anxiety. 90% of people over the age of 65 take at least one medication and many take more than one which increases their chances of drug reactions.  The article discusses tests that were done on certain medicines and the connections they have to memory loss.  It also talks about how important it is that people know about this connection.  That is what makes this story newsworthy.  It effects a lot of people, especially over the age of 65.  I also thought it was interesting at the end of the article it was mentioned that there are a variety of things that can cause memory loss.  Then, in the last paragraph, out of all the other thing they could have chosen to discuss they choose sex and the impact it can have on memory.  I thought this was an off topic choice and an odd way to end the story.

Meanwhile the Mustang football team continues to roll through their schedule with ease.  Recently named GPAC Champions and still undefeated, they are set to play Briar Cliff this weekend at 1pm.  One Mustang supporter, Alex Howrey, has made it her goal to make it to every game she can. A train derailed Sunday morning near Lester, IA on its way from Sioux City to Wilmer, MN.  One of the 25 carts that was derailed contained LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas) which is extremely flammable.  Because of this everyone in a one mile radius was evacuated. This story is newsworthy because it happened in Iowa. It wasn’t very close to Sioux City, but the train started out in Sioux City which catches a persons attention.  This is also somewhat rare and possibly dangerous which makes people more interested. Since we are dealing with broadcast right now I also thought it was interesting to compare the written story to how they said it on the news. In this case they were extremely similar.  The lead was split between the two anchors which kind of surprised me.  I think it made me pay more attention to what they were saying but I figured they would try to keep it as simple as possible and not break up sentences between the anchors.

Does marriage have a future?  According to Psychology Today marriage is in sharp decline in most developed countries.  As divorce rates continue to increase, most people are choosing to live together without getting married. Children in the U.S. are greatly affected by this kind of relationship.

Without the commitment of marriage the number of single mothers has seen a significant increase.  When it comes to raising a child this can have an effect on social and educational skills.

In Europe however, this is not the case.  Many people there are also choosing not to get married.  Other are choosing to raise a child on their own and the affect on the children is rarely seen.  Psychology Today believes that soon this style will make its way to the U.S. and child poverty will diminish.

So next time you hear marriage is “just a piece of paper” think about the effect it will have on the children.
