Story 4 – FINAL

January 15, 2010 was the day Allison Kjar’s whole life changed.  She was at a fireman’s dinner with her family, including her dad, Keith, and his girlfriend, Mindy, who he had only been seeing for 2 and ½ months at the time.  All was going well until a piece of steak her dad was eating got stuck in his throat.

They didn’t think much of it at the time.  Keith went in to the doctor to have his esophagus enlarged, which is a typical procedure for men because they tend to take big bites when they eat.  Instead of just a routine procedure, however, they found a tumor.

“You always think of the worst things first,” Allison said, when she first found out her dad had cancer.  “My thoughts were oh my God my dad isn’t going to see me graduate or get to walk me down the isle at my wedding.”

Allison Kjar, 19 years old, is a sophomore at Morningside College.  This blonde hair, blue eyed girl can always be seen on campus with a bright smile lighting up her face.  She loves shopping, socializing with friends, and spending time with her family.  In other words, she seems like a typical college girl.  No one would guess that this friendly, caring person has been through some pretty hard times.

When Allison was in high school her parents got divorced.  Allison and her 3 other sisters grew up with their dad, Keith, in Akron, IA.  She has always had a close relationship with her dad, which has become stronger through these hard times.  She learned not to take anything in life for granted, especially when it comes to family.

Keith was suffering from a rare cancer called Esophageal Cancer.  It was already in stage 3.  They began treatment right away.  Four times a week he would travel to Rochester to get treated.  This continued until Easter weekend in April when he was finally able to have surgery to remove the tumor.

“It was really scary.  From the beginning I said I’m going to beat this,” Keith said.

The hardest part, Allison said, was telling people about her dad.  At first they didn’t know how bad it was but having to tell other people put things in perspective.

“I was really emotional, I didn’t get much sleep,” she said.

After the surgery Keith wasn’t allowed to eat anything for two months.  Instead he would put water in his mouth, slosh it around, and spit it back out.  Then finally at the end of June he was able to eat pudding and applesauce.  His first real meal was an egg.

“We took him out to eat at Perkins. It was a pretty big deal,” Allison said.

Allison has always been close to her dad but she believes that this brought their whole family closer together.  Her dad’s relationship with his girlfriend became stronger.  It was a big test for them after only dating for a couple months.  They are now engaged and plan to get married sometime in the near future.

“It changed my relationship with God and my family.  We grew stronger,” Keith said.

This experience also taught Allison to be very independent.  She suddenly had more responsibilities, like taking care of her little sister, and basically being the mom of the house since her older sisters had all moved out. Despite that fact, her sisters all came home to help as well.

“I think it’s easier for us to deal with other problems after going through something like that,” Eliza Kjar, Allison’s younger sister, said.

It has now been almost three years since Allison’s dad has been diagnosed with cancer, and he is currently cancer free.  She sees her dad at least two to three times a week; it’s part of the reason she went to college so close to home.

“I can’t imagine not seeing him as often as I do,” Allison said.

After finding out her dad had cancer, Allison’s view on life took a drastic change.  She realized it’s the little things that really do count and that anything can change in an instant.

“People complain about school, or test grades, or even food in the caf.  I’m just thankful to be here and wake up every day.”

NFL linebacker kills his baby’s mother, then himself as coaches look on – 13

Jovan Belcher, linebacker of the Kansas City Chiefs, shot his girlfriend on Saturday at her home.  Their three month old daughter was in another room at the time of the incident.  He then got in his car and drove 5 miles to Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Cheifs, where he shot himself in the head in front of his coach and general manager.  The police heard the gunshot as they pulled into the parking lot.

This story is newsworthy because it obviously effects a lot of people that are going to want to know why he did this.  Something like this occurring is also pretty rare.  The police had no problems with Belcher prior to this incident and it is still a mystery as to what was the cause.  They only thing they know for sure was that the couple had been arguing lately.

The article that I read was from cnn.com and I thought it was interesting how throughout the article they put links to other pages with peoples opinions on the subject.  This adds more to the story than just having the one article.

Girl Meets World – 12

Filed under: Weekly News Comments — Caitlin at 6:41 am on Thursday, November 29, 2012

Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel, stars of the 90s show “Boy Meets World”, will once again be playing the roles of Cory and Topanga in the new sequel show “Girl Meets World”.  The show will focus on their 13 year old daughter, Riley, who has not been casted yet.  Cory will play the role of Riley’s seventh grade teacher in the show.  It is rumored that there will be some old characters and some new ones, but that people should keep in mind that this is a completely new show.

This is newsworthy because “Boy Meets World” was a very popular show in the 90s.  I think this is a smart movie for the Disney Channel because this show is going to target a big market.  Being on the Disney Channel, even if younger kids have never heard of “Boy Meets World”, they will be intrigued by a new show to watch.  It will also target people my age who grew up in the 90s watching “Boy Meets World” and will be interested to see the old characters in a new show.

Black Friday – Extra Credit News Comment

Wal-Mart has decided to open there doors at 8pm Thanksgiving night to begin there Black Friday sales.  As a result many workers across the country have become upset and are planning to go on strike.  1000 protests at different stores are expected to occur on Black Friday.  Workers have also said they are upset about low pay and not getting enough hours.  Even though this protest is being considered fairly small it may still cause problems, the biggest being discouraging shoppers from shopping at Wal-Mart.

From my experiencing working Black Friday is very crazy and entertaining.  Where I work we open at 5 in the morning.  I would be upset too if I had to go in to work at 8pm on Thanksgiving.  That takes away from time that is suppose to be spend with family.  This article was interesting because it talks about how all these people are planning to go on strike but at the end their biggest concern is the effect it will have on the shoppers.  They need to take their workers’ thoughts into consideration otherwise no one will want to work there anymore and they will have an even bigger problem on their hands.

Twinkie Hoarding Begins! – 11

This short story talks about how Hostess is being forced to shut down after a strike by their employees.  All products that they make are available while supplies last.  This includes twinkies.  There has been a sharp increase in the purchase of all Hostess products and that is expected to keep increasing as more people find out about the situation.  This is a newsworthy story because it certainly affects a lot of people.  The consumers of the product need to be aware and know why the product is no longer being made.  It will also cause a lot of people to be out of a job.  The title of this story caught my eye and actually made me laugh.  I just thought it was funny because it reminded me of the movie Zombieland and how one of the actors is on a hunt through the whole movie to find the last twinkies on earth.  Now it is actually happening.

Story 3 Final

Story 3 FINAL

I’m Caitlin Casey reporting for Morningside news.

Thanksgiving break is turning into a very busy week here on campus.  Whether it’s watching football, spending time with family, or Black Friday shopping, everyone’s traditions are different. Taylor Mahin is planning to go home for the holiday. (Quote from Taylor)  There is no right or wrong way to celebrate the holidays; every family has their own style.

I know my family will be glued to the TV the day after Thanksgiving as Nebraska takes on Iowa in the Heroes game. Nebraska’s current record is 8-2 and Iowa is sitting at 4-6.  Nancy Seeman is planning to make an appearance in Iowa City next Friday. (Quote from Nancy)  The game is scheduled for Friday, November 23, at 11am.

The Morningside football team continues to roll through their schedule with ease.  Recently named GPAC Champions and still undefeated, they are set to play Montana Tech on Saturday in the first round of playoffs.  One Mustang supporter, Alex Howrey, has made it her goal to make it to every game she can. (Quote from Alex).  If Morningside beats Montana Tech there next game will also be Thanksgiving weekend.  Good luck to the Mustangs with the rest of their season.

Memory Loss Could Be Caused By Your Meds, Not Your Age – 10

Filed under: Weekly News Comments — Caitlin at 9:23 pm on Sunday, November 11, 2012

New research is showing a connection between memory loss and medication for insomnia and anxiety. 90% of people over the age of 65 take at least one medication and many take more than one which increases their chances of drug reactions.  The article discusses tests that were done on certain medicines and the connections they have to memory loss.  It also talks about how important it is that people know about this connection.  That is what makes this story newsworthy.  It effects a lot of people, especially over the age of 65.  I also thought it was interesting at the end of the article it was mentioned that there are a variety of things that can cause memory loss.  Then, in the last paragraph, out of all the other thing they could have chosen to discuss they choose sex and the impact it can have on memory.  I thought this was an off topic choice and an odd way to end the story.

Along with the Nebraska-Iowa game comes Thanksgiving break.  Whether it’s watching football, spending time with family, or Black Friday shopping everyone’s traditions are different. Kylie Kneifl is planning to go home for the holiday. (Quote from Kylie)  There is no right or wrong way to celebrate the holidays; every family has their own style.

Meanwhile the Mustang football team continues to roll through their schedule with ease.  Recently named GPAC Champions and still undefeated, they are set to play Briar Cliff this weekend at 1pm.  One Mustang supporter, Alex Howrey, has made it her goal to make it to every game she can. Train derailment causes home evacuations in Lyon County – 9

Filed under: Weekly News Comments — Caitlin at 7:07 pm on Monday, November 5, 2012

A train derailed Sunday morning near Lester, IA on its way from Sioux City to Wilmer, MN.  One of the 25 carts that was derailed contained LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas) which is extremely flammable.  Because of this everyone in a one mile radius was evacuated. This story is newsworthy because it happened in Iowa. It wasn’t very close to Sioux City, but the train started out in Sioux City which catches a persons attention.  This is also somewhat rare and possibly dangerous which makes people more interested. Since we are dealing with broadcast right now I also thought it was interesting to compare the written story to how they said it on the news. In this case they were extremely similar.  The lead was split between the two anchors which kind of surprised me.  I think it made me pay more attention to what they were saying but I figured they would try to keep it as simple as possible and not break up sentences between the anchors.
