New Article

This was an amazing story to read..it did have a video at the end but it was basically word for word to the article. It was perfect length for someone with a short attention span. It was a medical story for that kind of scared me at first. I went in thinking I wasnt going to be able to understand it. But even though it was all about her birth defect they talked about it in a way that a normal average American who knows nothing about medical stuff could understand the article. It had a strong lead I thought and a great family picture at the top. I liked the lay out of the article. How the video was at the end..it made you read the article and not be lazy and just watch the video right away. It made you read the effort the reporter took into writing the article.

Wedding Gone Wrong

Newly weds break out into a fight that leads to the bride being shot by the groom. Richard Brunson age 50 and new wife Laurette Kenny Brunson age 38 got into a fight at their wedding reception. Laurette threw her plate of macaroni salad at Richard and Richard in return shoots her in the abdomen with his .22-calibre handgun. The couple had only been living together for 4 or 5 months prior to getting married.

“I heard the sound of the shot, or I think I did. It was kinda a pop pop pop and the son comes out yellin she’s been shot and cant breathe.” Said Walter Corse, one of their neighbors.

Laurette is at St. Luke’s hospital and she’s in satisfactory condition. Also the whereabouts of the groom are still unknown. Laurette had nothing to say to the press after the incident occurred.

One of their neighbors Michael Martin said “I’ve never seen him violent, never heard them yelling, it blows me away”

If you have any information on the location of Richard Brunson please contact the police.

New Article

This was a very well done article in my opinion. It had everything quotes, video, pictures, lots of information. It was a longer article but all the paragraphs were short”er”. The topic being such a serious topic it needed to be long to get all the information out. So I didn’t have a problem with it being so long. Sometimes articles get to be to long and I start to read them as blah blah blah but this one had my attention the whole time. The lead was good…a little typical for a school shooting. The title got my attention for then anything.

Science Article (Vampire Bats Vs. Rat Snake)

By: Caitlin Fieselman

Test done with a vampire bat and a rat snake concludes with the vampire bat winning.

Vampire bats are known for needing a lot of blood in their diet to survive, but too much will kill them. Another thing vampire bats are known for is peeing everywhere. Why do they pee so much? Well because they drink so much blood and there is a high content of water in blood they have to filter out the water.

Gerald Carter in a new article for Sciencenew.org says “Often they’ll be peeing while they’re feeding.”

With the evolutionary pressures vampire bats have they have become “superstrong. Superfast and superintelligent.” Because bats need at least one good sizable meal a day in Central and South America, if a bat needs to run with cattle to get blood from the sizable mammals they will. A vampire bat that goes three days with no good sizable meal of blood, they will die.

“An old experiment caged a vampire bat with a rat snake. The trapped bat dodged the snake’s strikes and ended up feeling on its reptilian face.” Says Carter.

Although vampire bats are very small they need their blood and will go after any size of mammal to get that blood, even if that includes a deadly snake.

News Article

This is a very short news article…I don’t even know if it counts as a new article. The headline was more of a lead then the lead itself. But I guess it was very short and to the point and that’s what readers want maybe. Could have been a little longer talking about how they are expected to do this year or how they did last year…but other then that it got my attention and was a fine article. Not the best. But fine.

Final-Student Athlete Article

A student-athlete has a lot on their plate while in season. Every sport misses some class, some sports more then others. For example golf. The tournaments are sometimes two days long and if they are a good distance away they have to leave a day early to travel. That’s three days of class they just missed for one tournament.

When the golf team misses class every student-athlete does things differently to stay or get caught up. For instance, they have to be very organized, or they have to have a good relationship with their teachers and go in and talk to them before and after the tournament, and get the assignment and help if needed.

Sarah Davy, who’s one of the seniors on the Morningside Women’s Golf team says “I stay caught up by keeping a very detailed agenda in my planner. I am big in making lists and this definitely helps me stay caught up and remembering what to do that I missed in class.”

Golfers having anywhere from 2-6 hours of homework a day and are use to it. In fact Cristina Salinas who golfed for Iowa Western Community College said  “expect to do about 2 or 3 hours of homework a night, if not more. But that just comes with the territory of being a college golfer.”

They can’t help their schedule as to when and how much class they may miss, it isn’t their fault, it’s not intentional. So when teachers don’t understand, it gets a little frustrating. It’s very irritating to the athlete when the teacher gets frustrated that they are missing yet another class. Sometimes teachers just joke about the student being gone again but the student doesn’t know the teacher well enough to tell if they are joking or not.

Kelsey Nelson who’s a senior on the Morningside Women Golf team says “Some teachers support me others I don’t think do. But sometimes it is hard to tell.” She continued to say, “My teachers always joke about how much I miss, but they are usually okay.”

Becoming a college level student-athlete can be very intimidating and scary. But it’s manageable. If you are smart about how you handle being a student-athlete. Being so busy with classes and sports can be a blessing in disguise. There is a much lower rate of college student-athletes getting into trouble around campus as compared to the college students who are just students. Why? Because most student-athletes pick a school more for their sport, like football or basketball, “they pick a school with athletics in mind first and academics second,” says Gary Gutting author of The Myth of the ‘Student-Athlete’ in a “The New York Times” online article.

Davy’s advice to student-athletes, “I would tell them to take advantage of all the opportunities you get being an athlete AND a student. There are so many things going on, especially as a freshman, and to form those bonds and friendships is key to a happy and successful time in college.”

Salinas’ advice to student-athletes who are thinking about continuing their athletic career in college says, “ Always go to class and try to get ahead instead of being right on track or behind.”

Balance out your time and life, know when to have fun and when you need to buckle down and do work for class. Being a student-athlete is a privilege and can be taken away at anytime. Not being eligible to play because of grades is the worth thing ever. Some coaches even have scholarships set up so that if you are suspended or aren’t playing because of misbehavior or bad choices will not think twice about taking away your money and your parents will not be happy to hear you lost your scholarship. Also remember you are in college, it’s your chance to have fun. Just figure out right away what’s good clean fun vs. bad choices fun.

Article

The article says the same thing that the video says, but takes a lot longer then a video would. If there is a video and a article for the same news article I probably wont read the article and I’ll just watch the video. Three reasons for that. One I’m a slow reader. Two videos are usually faster. And three I’m a visual person, and seeing video along with the news helps me understand it better. Even though my story are from two different news sources I know they are the same exact story because the picture in the article is the same guy that’s in the video. If you can have pictures why not just make a video.

News Article

The lead was good but the headline is what got my attention. I love articles with a new video at the beginning of the article. I personally would rather watch the video then read an article. It’s faster and I better understand things with pictures and video, then trying to picture it in my head with my own imagination.

There’s a lot of information in the short article and there’s a lot of good quotes. I thought it was an all around good article. Weird article but put together well.
