Science Article (Vampire Bats Vs. Rat Snake)

By: Caitlin Fieselman

Test done with a vampire bat and a rat snake concludes with the vampire bat winning.

Vampire bats are known for needing a lot of blood in their diet to survive, but too much will kill them. Another thing vampire bats are known for is peeing everywhere. Why do they pee so much? Well because they drink so much blood and there is a high content of water in blood they have to filter out the water.

Gerald Carter in a new article for Sciencenew.org says “Often they’ll be peeing while they’re feeding.”

With the evolutionary pressures vampire bats have they have become “superstrong. Superfast and superintelligent.” Because bats need at least one good sizable meal a day in Central and South America, if a bat needs to run with cattle to get blood from the sizable mammals they will. A vampire bat that goes three days with no good sizable meal of blood, they will die.

“An old experiment caged a vampire bat with a rat snake. The trapped bat dodged the snake’s strikes and ended up feeling on its reptilian face.” Says Carter.

Although vampire bats are very small they need their blood and will go after any size of mammal to get that blood, even if that includes a deadly snake.
