Change for the better

“Being the biggest kid wasn’t fun at all, I got made fun of and I felt really lazy. I knew I had to make a change.” My friend Jordan was a big kid growing up and I don’t mean tall. He was taller than most but he weighed in at 210 as a sophomore in high school. “I decided to change because of my brother, he was always a strong influence on me and wanted me to be the best version of myself.” Says Jordan.

Jordans brother is 8 years older so he has always showed Jordan the ropes but the biggest thing that Ricky has taught him was to go to the gym and eating healthy. “Not only is going to the gym necessary but you have to eat well to balance it out.” Ever since then, Jordan has been on a mission to better himself and watch what he eats. Not only does this help him lose weight it also made him feel better about himself.

“My daily diet was always cereal in the morning, snacks, and then for lunch I wouldn’t eat anything healthy but quite the opposite and I remember always having a Dr. Pepper.” Having poor eating habits is the fastest way to become out of shape and since Jordan had poor habits it led to him being the biggest kid in the school.

The key to working out is too have self motivation. You got to want it for yourself no matter what the reason may be. For Jordan his motivation and dedication made him pursue to go to the gym every day. “The key to self fulfillment is through self improvement. I try to improve myself everyday when I go to the gym and be the best I can be.”

“The Journey was long and is still on going as I continue to go to the gym and better myself.” Even though Jordan lost almost all that weight he put it back on but in a much healthier fashion. Jordan now weighs 200 lbs but it’s mostly muscle.

Jordan started making the change second semester in his sophomore year. His doctor told him he needed better/ healthier habits, because Jordan was on his way of becoming obese. “When I first started I absolutely hated it, I felt like I didn’t belong there at first, but since my brother was there it gave me the confidence to be there too. After a while I realized that everyone in the gym wasn’t there to judge me but there for the same reason I was, self fulfillment.”

After listing to his story it was truly inspiring to me because Ricky was looking out after Jordan and making sure that he lives his life up to his full potential. Thanks to Ricky, Jordan no longer has to worry about other peoples opinion about him being overweight. “It hurts being made fun of, especially if it’s something that you can control.”-Jordan

“You have to see working out as a marathon and not a sprint, way too often I see people treat it as a sprint and when they don’t achieve what they wanted quickly, they just give up. Seeing it as a marathon kind of humbles you and teaches you that you need to have patience to work out.” In my opinion Jordans statement is so true because like most things in life, you have to wait and have the patience for success. and working out is a perfect example. There are days where people will think it is pointless to go because they see no improvement. But the more you push yourself and the harder you work, the happier you are going to be with yourself at the end of the day.

Jordan is so happy for where he is at and he is so thankful that his brother showed him the right way to treat your body. His journey from where he started was long but with dedication and patience, you can achieve your dream body.

Jalen’s Anecdote

When Jalen was looking through all the words to see which described his character the best he came up with Loyal. Loyal is such a powerful word and is hard to come across someone who is loyal these days. Jalen stays loyal by never turning his back on his family and is always there for their help if needed.

He also never switches up on his friends and will always have his friends back no matter the circumstances. Jalen shared a story about a time that one of his friends messed up and he needed Jalen to come and pick him up. Jalen showed his true loyalty by getting out of bed and going to pick up his friend from a party.

Water on anything but Earth seems far fetched to a normal person. But scientists from NASA has discovered ice and evidence of water in the bottom of a crater on the lunar side of the moon. The side that is lit up. This is a big discovery because we weren’t sure if water was on another object besides Earth. Life as we know it needs water in order to survive so if there is water on the moon there is potential for water on other planets. Finding water on the moon is big because it was always thought to be dry and free of water.

Another big discovery in space is the asteroid Psyche and with a diameter of about 140 miles, it is roughly the same length as Massachusetts. This asteroid is special because its estimated value is to be $10,000 quadrillion. This is more than the entire Earths economy combined. This big asteroid is located in the astroid belt between Mars and Jupiter and is one of the biggest asteroids in the belt. This big rock is made up of Iron and Nicole and even just .1% of this massive rock can be worth millions of dollars. NASA is setting up a rover to go up and investigate the astroid and see if they can discover any secrets that it has about our planet and other.

Coming back down to Earth we look at the election. This election is defiantly one for the record books with it being too close to call in 3 different states. (Nevada, Georgia and Michigan). As of right now Joe Biden is winning the popular vote but as we know back in 2016 so did Hillary Clinton. But the popular vote just means the electoral college for the state will either be Democrat or Republican. It is a race to 270 electoral college votes and Joe Biden is in the lead with 256 to President Trump who is at 213. Many people are nervous both ways about Joe winning and about Trump winning. But one thing to remember we are the United States of America. Not DIVIDED. This race is defiantly one for the record books.

NASA discovers water on the moon!

NASA made an amazing discovery 2 days ago with Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy or SOFIA for short. SOFIA used infrared light to confirm that there is in fact water on the moon, enough to fill up a 12 oz water bottle. This is a big deal because when the Apollo astronauts came back in 1969 it was thought to be completely dry.

Water was discovered in the Clavius Crater which is located in the southern hemisphere and can actually be seen from earth. “We had indications that H2O – the familiar water we know – might be present on the sunlit side of the Moon,” said Paul Hertz, director of the Astrophysics Division in the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters.

This now being confirmed is a big deal because in order for life to exist as we know, water is a crucial element. I’m not saying that there is life on the moon because the moon has no atmosphere which means no oxygen. But if there is water on the moon that we thought was to be completely dry then there could be water on other planets that we didn’t know about.

Several things could be at play in the creation of this water. “Micrometeorites raining down on the lunar surface, carrying small amounts of water, could deposit the water on the lunar surface upon impact. Another possibility is there could be a two-step process whereby the Sun’s solar wind delivers hydrogen to the lunar surface and causes a chemical reaction with oxygen-bearing minerals in the soil to create hydroxyl.”

These are very valid theories for how water became to be on the moon. In my opinion I think that meteorites carrying water crashes into the moon. I think this because the water was found at the bottom of the craters and it has been proven that some meteorites carry small amounts of water, so to me this makes the most sense.

The change is now!

Greta Thunberg from Sweden gave a speech yesterday about climate change. She spoke on behalf of climate justice.

In her speech she describes how mankind is moving “forward” with their inventions and products but don’t even consider the mess that they leave behind. “We cannot solve a crisis without treating it as a crisis.” Thunberg also said that we need to keep fossil fuels in the ground and stop bringing so much of it out.

“We have run out of excuses and we are running out of time.” The time is now and it starts with us recognizing the problem and developing a plan for how to fix this problem.

A chat with returning mustang!

Morningside Graduate, Steven Postolka came back to talk to the class Tuesday about his life and what he does for a career.

Steven went to Morningside and double majored in Political Science and Mass com and went on to law school at the university of Iowa. Then got a job for Sioux City, “I represent the city in court if they are being sued or if the city wants to sue I represent them as well”. Steven stressed that a lot of his work is not in the court room but in fact outside of it.

Sioux City isn’t that big of a city but how many times does it get sued in a year? “Around tens of thousands but the cases aren’t big enough for the ones for me to handle.” A lot of the cases that come through or against the city are minor like workers comp. “But sometimes we get sued for claims as big as a million dollars, those are the types of cases that I handle.”\

Since Steven is good at his job it has opened the door of opportunity to other states and other cities that are bigger. But Steven. said “I like this city, I like my pay and I’m happy here, its hard for me to move on.”

Makes sense that Steven wants to stay because he went to college here and is very familiar to the place. It was awesome having him in and having him talk about his work experiences and what he has achieved so far in his career. He is a really interesting guy and it was cool to have him come back to his old college.

It’s a Bird, It’s a plane, It’s a… Man flying a jetpack?

Weird turn of events after an American Airlines plane was on its way down too LAX the pilots saw a man flying a jetpack at 3,000 feet up in the air.

The pilot reported that the aircraft was approximately 30 yards away from the flying man. “Tower. American 1997. We just passed a guy on a jetpack,” the first plane called in. “Off the left side maybe 300 — 30 yards or so. About our altitude.” One of the pilots said.

Shortly after the first aircraft saw this man another one did as well in the same spot where he was spotted last time.

FBI is looking into this but came up with nothing so far. Local law enforcement is working on this matter too.
